The New Yorker. Just last week, they had a heartbreaking, profile of Gil Scott-Heron that contained some truly good writing (and editing; I always notice editing). Pretty much every issue, I learn something, frequently in a subject I’d never thought about before. I sometimes think that the long life and continued excellence of The New Yorker shows that sometimes civilization not only works, but it excels. Though I much prefer the non-fiction; I’ve been annoyed by their fiction for years.
New Yorker — I’ve been reading it since high school. Given my usual lack of interest in pursuing political, social and scientific topics, it keeps me informed without having to do the searching.
I enjoy Country Living magazine because I do live in the country and have always loved a country-style home. The mag itself is affordable and well-written, and the styles showcased are accessible, not snobby. Best of all are the strongly applicable-to-my-real-life how-tos and interesting articles about people who really use these tips themselves. It’s also fun to see what other folks are doing with their places. I know this is fluffy but I have almost no leisure time so I like to spend it doing something kind of mindless, in contrast to being hyper-intense the rest of the time.
I stopped reading magazines in about 2005. I get all my information on-line. Magazines cost too much and so far the web is free. I never found time to read them, so I can go on-line and pick and choose what I wish to read.
the New Yorker, as it reminds me there are some smart people in the world, the cartoons are great, and it shows me how the plays that opened in Boston are doing when they move to NY!

I enjoy reading Parenting magazine. Who would have EVER thought that??! Sorry, parenting is the same no matter what your sexual orientation.
I like to read the New England Journal of Medicine online. They have this fun photo thing where you try to guess what kind of rash or pathology the poor patient has–multiple choice. I’m right about a third of the time, but I have lots of company. They show how many people chose the various answers, and I’m never alone. This only encourages me to regret not having gone to med school–in Granada.
