KIVA – I love that I can be a part of microloans to help people build or begin their own businesses.
My favorite charity is the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice, headquartered in NYC, but gives grants to organizations world wide. They have always prioritized projects geared toward and/or run by lesbians of color. They also support other LGBTQI projects and artists and arts organizations.
I give to a lot of groups, like Kiva and Donors Choose, but one of my favorites is Woman Earth & Spirit (http://womanearthandspirit.org/), a small nonprofit that helps women and lesbians. They helped me enormously by acting to catch and disburse the money we raised in an online auction for a friend who desperately needed a liver transplant (she had insurance, but there were many many costs that aren’t covered by insurance, like the transportation of her live donor across the country!). I’ve given when they’ve run small fundraisers for women in need so those women could afford their medications, or electricity, or to take a beloved animal to the vet, or when WE&S’s copy machine broke down. They work miracles with small amounts of money.

I like a lot of them but want to talk about a new one I discovered a few days ago. I saw a picture of a poor barefoot girl and thought, “Why can’t we at least give flip flops to people who don’t have shoes?” They’re so cheap and durable. So I did a quick internet search and sure enough – there is a new non-profit charity called flip flops for families. Their website is http://www.flipflopsforfamilies.org/ So at the moment they’re my favorite.

Lots of great charities out there, but my favorite right now is the ELEPHANT SANCTUARY in Tennessee. (Elephants. com.) It’s the largest elephant sanctuary in the U.S., takes in abused, ill or misplaced elephants from around the world: the girls (yes, all are female; it’s better that way)don’t entertain, perform labor, cavort for the public or do anything but heal and grow healthy on 2700 the sanctuary’s 2700 acres. This is a small step in the right direction, considering the horrors humankind has perpetrated on this endangered species.
