Taxing all Religions 6
How can we force the government to start taxing all religions? I have been
for this idea for years now since they all in someway try to influence their
followers in political ways.

Dear Sandi,
First we just keep talking about it. Then we learn about it: what are the guidelines? What actually constitutes stepping over the line? What organizations are working on this already? Find out and get back to me. I’m waiting for a call from Obama’s transition team for the job of Humor Laureate.

Kate
Fey qua Palin 1
What are your thoughts about Tina Fey as Palin?
Laura

Dear Laura,
From now on you can bet that there will be a different kind of vetting for political candidates -
“You’ve sure got all the qualifications we are looking for but we can’t take you because you look too much like somebody on Saturday Night Live.”
Thank goodness for Fey qua Palin – “Marriage is for two unwilling teenagers.”

The Vatican 0
Hi Kate,
The Vatican is putting pressure on Roy Bourgeois, the Maryknoll priest activist who is involved with the Close the School of the Americas Campaign, because he has attended and preached the homily at the most recent roman catholic womens’ ordination. Are you involved in efforts to dismantle/transform church patriarchy or is it a non-starter for you?
Sister Arlene Flaherty

Dear Sister,
I so happily remember those little Maryknoll books of my youth! They really inspired me to do missionary work. My particular work is within my area of expertise which is comedy. It is not religions I mind, it is their fundamentalisms. So in my work I do try to expose hierarchical hypocrisies. I admire anyone who tries to transform the church from within, but find I do not have the temperament for such work.

Kate
Hope-aholic 1
Granted there may not be a lot of us who remember, but is it just me or
does Palin remind you of Phyllis Schlafly?
At least she sure gives you a lot of new material to work with! Am
looking forward to being at the Birchmere when you’re there in November,
in the meanwhile stay sane, and thanks for contributing to my sanity.

Dear Viki,
It wasn’t just you – it was you and Gloria Steinem who saw the connection.
Gloria in her great op ed in the LA Times – “Wrong Woman, Wrong Message”
calls Sarah Palin a young Phyllis Schlafly. I don’t know if Phyllis’s
Wikipedia has been scrubbed, but there’s no mention of her gay son.
Hmmmmmmm….
Gloria refers to herself as a “hope-aholic” and even manages to find some
good Hurricane Sarah. I’m following Gloria’s lead and not going insane.
And hip hip hip hooray for my Serena Williams!!
That helped -

Dear Mark,
Hubba hubba! Like all sensible, former Clinton supporters, I am changing
my party affiliation. John McCain got it so right. There’d be some
heavy breathing on that 3am call.
And you were worried that I wouldn’t have any good material without
George. . .
Best,
Kate
