HAPPY BIRTHDAY KATE!

Kate looks to the future on her 60th Birthday.

What does the future mean to Kate and what is she looking for!

Kate responds:

As always I look and work for an end to the oppression of women, which
will mean no more war or Jenny Craig. I remain optimistic, despite
current idiotic evidence to the contrary. Since I believe this is my
only life, my only day, I prefer optimism.
I am a gray haired lesbian Polyanna.

Enjoy your day Miss Clinton!

Woman Of The Year

On October 13, 2007, the Women Innkeepers of Provincetown will begin a new tradition during Women’s Week by bestowing the Woman of the Year Award to a member of Provincetown’s women’s community. The intent of this Award is to honor a Provincetown woman who has made a significant difference in the lives of other women, and who has contributed in an extraordinary way to women and to her community.

The Women Innkeepers of Provincetown are honored this year to bestow this prestigious Woman of the Year Award to Kate Clinton, writer, activist, and comedian, for the great work she has done in raising political awareness and encouraging other women to live honestly and consciously. We wish to honor her twenty-five years of bringing laughter to the thousands of women who have listened to her unique perspective, and whose lives have been changed by her words.

The Award is represented by a stylized ceramic sculpture of a woman, designed and created by renowned Provincetown sculptor Gail Browne. The original sculpture will be on display at Gail Browne Studios on Commercial Street during Women’s Week, prior to the presentation.

The Women Innkeepers of Provincetown will present the Award to Kate Clinton during the gala Masquerade Ball on Saturday, October 13 at 10:30pm. The Ball will be held at Paramount at the Crown and Anchor, 247 Commercial Street, and features a night of dancing to the music of the incredible Claire Daly Band.

The mission of the Women Innkeepers of Provincetown is to promote, cultivate, and assist member innkeepers in business in Provincetown. Our primary focus is to fill our guest accommodations through networking, group marketing and advertising, mutual referrals and sponsorship of events. In addition, we work to provide a quality Provincetown experience to visitors and support our local Provincetown community.

The Bill Dwight Rewind Show

Perugia Press of Florence is celebrating its 10th anniversary this weekend with a series of events featuring the poetry of the selected women artists whom have they have published over the years.

The events are capped off by the sharp and comic insights of Kate Clinton in a special performance at Northampton High School on Sunday night (check out Perugia's site for ticket information).

Kate does all the heavy lifting for the show and I provide an adequate excuse for her to avoid doing her bills. Symbiosis is so cool and makes for decent radio.

What a Swell Party it Was

Good thing I don’t drink any more, or I’d just be sobering up from the from the NCLR 30th Anniversary GayLa Weekend. It was, as Lily Tomlin used to say, jam-packed and fun-filled.

You’ve got to give it to those San Fransisters at NCLR. They pulled out all the stops. The Friday night dinner for the major donors was held at the Merchants Exchange Building. After a cocktail party in the cavernous reception area, we all took the world’s oldest elevators up to a beautiful, wood paneled room that was decked out for 350 for dinner. As K. J. Denhert entertained with her jazzy riffs, everyone mingled and yacked. It was the family dinner you have always dreamed of.

The wonderful board of NCLR was all there and did a delightful roast, okay light poach, of the executive director, Kate Kendell who has led the organization with a fine fierce fun for ten years. She is a great story teller and told about a panel she was on with Gloria Steinem and Harry Belafonte. Kate does an excellent imitation of Mr. Belafonte and ably conveyed his rousing commitment to GLBT human rights. At dinner we also got a sneak preview of the wonderful new informative NCLR video. I encouraged everyone to get home early to get rested for the next night’s party.

Late Saturday morning, I went to Golden Gateway Tennis and Swim Club. Not to work out, but to attend the tennis clinic that this year’s Voice and Visibility Honoree, Martina Navratilova generously conducted for ten lucky auction winners. Martina worked on the basics and then played doubles with the players, all the while giving running commentary and corrections on her pesky headset. I did my best imitation of a young Wimbledon ball girl. I’m sure the BenGay will kick in any minute. We all had lunch together after and then it was off to some industrial fluffing and primping for the party.

Because 3,500 were expected, the event had outgrown the usual location of the Moscone Center, so the Gala was held at The Festival Pavilion at Fort Mason. The irony of all those lesbians asking, telling and kvelling at an old army base was not lost on many. The huge arching Pavilion had been transformed into a bacchanalian bash with food areas, seating areas, raised stages for break dancers and feather dancers, women cirque du soleiling, suspended over the crowd. Don’t try that at home. Or do. It was a throbbing moveable feast of music, dancing and feasting - an apt celebration of thirty years of NCLR.

The honor of emceeing was mine again, though it was more ringleading at a three ring circus. The program honored out NBA player John Ameiche and Martina Navratilova. I ran the live auction and we raised some more cash for the cause! It did get a bit out of hand. And I would like to apologize to the Victoria’s Secret people who never intended that my new hi-tech underwire be used to stuff twenties from the crowd, but a fundraising gal has to do what a gal has to do. Martina and Kate tucked the green too. After the short program, the DJ cranked up her turntable and the huge checkered dance floor was jammed until the wee hours. Later that night, I found an errant twenty dollar bill stuck to my stomach. I promise to send it to the NCLR development gals. I am claiming it. It was the most tax deductible fun I’ve ever had.

Oscar Night at the Lesbians!

It’s Monday afternoon in New York, so the Oscars must be over, right? Quick question: Was Jack Nicholson bald in solidarity with Britney? Is she still doing her rehabs a day at a time? I think it’s early Mouseketeer damage, but I feel for her. Can we get a restraining order out on Paris Hilton?

Our little Oscar party had a lovely time with excellent snacks. We thought Ellen did a great job hosting. The estrogen of daytime comedy does cause irony poor blood, but we were proud nonetheless. We loved the little butch outfit she wore, thought the white shoes were dreamy. That last blue outfit, not so much, but two out of three ain’t bad. Loved the American Idol/Al Gore voting joke. Very sly, beautifully constructed. We all screamed when Melissa’s name was announced. Loved the Tammy kiss and Melissa’s passionate, global acceptance speech.

When the proceedings dragged – and there wasn’t enough of Ellen to blame it on her, so stop - our self-appointed clicker and top, switched us over to quick, refreshing inter-lewds of the L-Word. How long was that Celine Dijon singing? I’m sure she’s a lovely person, or a tangy mustard, but she makes my skin crawl and my clicker finger itch. Not in a good way.

Some suggestions for next time. Hosting the Oscars is a thankless job. They’ve tried lots of combinations – straight, black, white, gay, man, woman – but somebody always ends up in tears. If critics think it’s so easy, next time instead of sacrificing another comic on the Oscar stage, how about using one of those precious actors as host? Cut the montages. How about a category for “Best Famous Person Impersonation”? I can’t wait for the movie “The Queen Latifah”.

It was a big weekend for the L-Word. Mega-Millionairess Suze Orman came out in the Sunday New York Times magazine. Stock shares in California Closet dropped drastically. How soon before we are treated to the dire climate predictions of meteorologist/fundamentalist Pat Robertson?

Now that the Oscars are over, I think, it’s on to The March Madness of Women’s History Month!!

L-Word

The N-word, the F-word, and a whole Sesame Street of offending words has caused Slur Rehabs to proliferate faster than non-binding resolutions. But lesbians? Heck, we don’t take offense at the L-word. We embrace it, celebrate it, and make it into a smash hit series on Showtime! I love us.

And nothing makes me happier than a Northeast winter snowstorm, a backlog of unwatched L-Words and an at-home with my girlfriend! We watched three Ls in a row one recent, football-less Sunday, and I’m sure that Cybill Shepherd packs a wallop on a week by week basis, but to watch her over a three hour period was completely engrossing. I wore my astronaut diaper. It was multi-purpose.

Cybil’s character is exuberant, joyful, lustful and finally discovering lesbians. I am not current with my L-words again, and maybe Cybill’s character has turned into some kind of freak show - don’t tell me - but she sure was fun to watch opening up. As opposed to say, Judi Densch in Notes on a Scandal. You just wanted to say to her, “Judi, Judi, get a little rainbow flag, march in the Dyke March, watch Cybill in the L-Word. Loosen up.”

Like so many other story lines on the L-Word, the late coming of Cybill’s character is an untold, largely invisible story. A recent article in the New York Times chronicled the increase of sexual activity in naturally occurring retirement centers because of the “popularity of Viagra” as well as “women shedding the idea that sex is shameful.” Most of the women quoted in the article seemed happy for the knowledge, but not about to put it into action. The article also noted “an uptick in homosexual activity” and detailed the lecture given by a sex educator who had been invited to one center to give safe sex information.

Can we augment her talk with some episodes of the L-Word? It’d help those old coot guys more than any Viagra. But since the aging population is predominantly female, just show the Cybill episodes I saw – it might give some of our dear older unsuspectingly Sapphic sisters some ideas!

TGIF

I never thought I’d say this, but thank goddess it’s February. Though it’s the shortest month, it is jam packed – Articulate, Clean, Good-Looking Black History Month, Super Bowl, the Grammies, Valentine’s Day, Susan B. Anthony’s Birthday, bone crushing winter and just in time, the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition. In its Northeast distribution, SI usually airbrushes in little goosebumps. Not this time. One of the hardest working dreamgirls in the business graces this year’s cover, Beyonce Knowles. I defy you to describe her without using your hands. She makes this white girl inarticulate.
