Fan Spotlight: Coming Out in Michigan
Dear Kate,
I first saw you perform when I was 16 years old. I grew up in a very small town outside of East Lansing Michigan, and I was coming to grips so to speak with being a lesbian. I no longer remember how I found out you were performing at MSU, but I remember going to the show. It was the first Lesbian event I ever attended and I was awe struck! I think there were more people at your show than was in my senior class!
What I remember most was that with all the teenage angst bullshit, and self-loathing and fear of being different - I left your show, smiling, laughing and with the realization that I was just fine the way I was. By being able to find humor is what made it all okay for me - I never again worried about being gay or about being out, or what others thought of it. The therapist I was going to was not too happy when I quit that next week!
You had a line at the beginning of your show - "thanks for coming out", and really what I need to say is "Thank you for helping me come out, and helping me be happy with who I was." Your jokes and stories made me stronger, and gave me courage that made it possible for me, and I am sure countless others.
That was the spring of 1982, and I have always credited you with what I feel has been a very successful life as an out lesbian. I met you in person 4 or 5 years later and had a wonderful conversation about Pee-Wee's play house, before his unfortunate theater debut, and then again years later at one of the many Michigan Womyn's festivals.
You have always been a joy in my life and I wish you all the success and wonders the world can give you - if any one deserves them, in my book it's you.
Best to you - looking forward to your return to Michigan in May - I'll be there for sure.

Dear Kate,
We got married in Provincetown during Women's Week. In fact, we came to your show on our wedding day, and you were kind enough to sign our wedding log book and let us take this photo with you.
This is just a note to give you some information you may be able to use during your tour when you visit our city (Asheville) in May. Anyway, we put our wedding announcement in the newspaper here and then lost our business contract with a local ski area. We decided to go to the press about it, and it has caused quite a stir in our rather progressive little haven in the South. We even led the six o'clock news a few days ago. Here are a couple of links if you care to check it out any more:

We've gotten tons of feedback about this and it has been on gay blogs everywhere. Here is our favorite posting:
"Sure is cold out today, Millie. Do you wanna ski the bunny slope or take on some moguls?"
"I don't know, Edith, How about we... hey, wait a minute!"
"What is it? We don't have much time; our church group bus leaves in an hour."
"Do you see that woman over there in the red coat with the big-lensed camera and the tripod? What do you suppose she's doing?"
"Looks like she's taking some pictures of the resort."
"Oh, I'll bet her husband just loves that; his wife out in the world working instead of staying home to take care of the kids and attend to her husband's needs!"
"Look again, Millie. The bi-level spiky blonde haircut. The men's Doc Marten boots. And I'd swear that's a promotional overcoat with the 'Ellen' TV show logo on it. That woman is a homosexual!"
"No! Edith, are you sure?"
"Well, I did see an announcement in the newspaper a couple of weeks ago about two lesbians getting gay married."
"Oh my gosh! There's a homosexual taking pictures of us skiing at the resort! When people see those pictures, they'll know we allowed ourselves to be photographed by a sodomite! Edith, what will Father Nelson think if he knows our ski trip was documented by an abomination in God's eyes?"
"I don't know, Millie. We'd better just pack up and leave now so we can begin our letter writing campaign against the resort for hiring a sexual deviant. It's like you can't go anywhere for a nice afternoon without being assaulted by these filthy degenerates trying to shove their wicked lifestyle down our throats!"
"You're so right, Edith. Let's go see Father Nelson. He should be back from his meeting with the archdiocese about those ridiculous false pedophilia charges that were trumped up by the liberal media."
Well, we're looking forward to seeing you here on tour May 6th.
Take care,
Virginia & Laurel
