April Trivia Contest: Win The Marrying Kind!
Take a shot at winning a free copy of Kate's 7th comedy collection CD The Marrying Kind! The first person to email us with the correct answer to the following trivia question gets the CD: Where did Kate first perform?

The answer to last month's trivia question, "How many Clinton kids are there?" is four: 3 brothers and one sister. Congrats to Kathleen Spillane for a very quick and very correct answer. Enjoy the CD! Thanks for playing, every body!

It seems the fact checker was asleep on the job -- the February question, "What is Kate's full name?" was so hard even we got it wrong, as we discovered after sending out last month's results! It's not Katherine Ann Marie Clinton, but Kathleen Ann Marie Clinton. We think.

Have some friends or family who might want to enter next month's contest? Make sure they're signed up too!

Laughing Matters from Wolfe Video
Laughing Matters celebrates the work of four lesbian comics who pioneered queer standup comedy in the 1980s and early '90s, when being out in the entertainment industry was not as common a topic as it is in the post-Ellen DeGeneres era. Alternating candid interviews with live standup performances, comedians Kate Clinton, Karen Williams, Marga Gomez, and Suzanne Westenhoefer offer their comic observations on being funny and lesbian -- and the unique challenges involved in both.

Available now at Wolfe Video.

Lauren, Nancy, Kate, Emily and Miriam at the San Francisco Plush Room show

Emily writes:

Hello Ms Clinton,
What a wonderful performance you gave this past weekend at the Plush Room in SF! I must admit you had me crying I was laughing so hard!*hehe*

The friends I was with have seen your show half a dozen times, they adore you! Yes, this show was my first... but I swear it won't be my last!

I was one of the "lucky" three who got up on stage to play back-up band for your choir sing-a-long. What a blast I had! If you re-call I was also the one who ran into you in the ladies' room just before the show. I was of course, awestruck! *smile*

Thank you for the wonderful evening... many wishes to you and may you continue with your success!

Ciao!
Emily Bender =)

Cathy Sullivan, Seattle

Hi Kate,
I just got home from your show tonight in Seattle.

I used to volunteer at the Women's Center in Albany NY. I produced your concert there. It must have been in the spring of 1981. You were still a high school teacher in Syracuse.

Great job. It is amazing that you've been able to make a living as a lesbian comic for 25 years.

Congrats.
Cathy Sullivan

Heading back to Toronto for 25th Anniversary

"Happened to get word from Maggie (Cassella) that you are on your way to Toronto for your 25th Anniversary Tour. Hum, I enclose 3 pics that may just remind you of the last time."

Deb Mosk and Debra Shapiro, MD with Kate

Debra writes:

How I Earned KC Frequent Flyer Miles by Debra Shapiro, MD
I have memories of seeing KC in the early 80's in Santa Cruz, California. Of the entire routine, I have to admit, I remember mostly the "menstrual standards": laughing hilariously as she mimed wrapping her sanitary napkins in rolls and rolls of toilet paper to avoid her brothers' discovering them. I had no brothers in the house growing up, but the jokes seemed timeless. I probably still had the vestigial napkin belt in an underwear drawer at home. I remembered the 5th grade films..I guess I empathized with the idea of being uncomfortable with your body and its peculiar functions. I wasn't very politicized yet, but as a budding college baby dyke I appreciated the early line: "she wouldn't say lesbian even if she had her mouth was full of one." That left an impression and an image that I could sink my teeth into, if you will. I knew she was a "recovering Catholic" and that was cool...it was the disco 80's and I thought religion was dead anyway. I wasn't concerned about the Pope one way or another--I didn't fear religion as I do now---I just enjoyed the beautiful out comedienne with the sly smile and soft voice who was telling me that it was okay to be gay.
