Summertime, Summertime
Dear Faithful Newsletter Readers!
Too soon I will be leaving the pleasures of riding my bike to work here in Provincetown and heading back to the planes, trains and automobiles of life on the road. The summer respite has been great -- I've played bad tennis, seen old friends and workshopped new material. I feel rested and ready to see more of you in your hometowns and to continue the 25th Anniversary Tour.
NCLR and all my tour sponsors continue to help get the word out and the fall promises to be as jam packed and fun filled as the first half of the tour. I look forward to seeing you at and after shows. So many of you have shared your reminiscences of first shows, favorite jokes and brought photos. Whatever did I do with that fuscia jump suit and why didn't I do it sooner?
Despite the predictable use of gay marriage as a get out the vote strategy, I remain optimistic about the mid-term elections. Especially if each of you, dear readers, gets involved in your local and state elections. Out of the chat rooms, into the streets. As you have in the past with your courageous coming out or support of someone who has, it's time to put your bodies on the line again. Check in with national organizations and find out what you can do on the street.
It has been wonderful staying in touch with you through our newsletter -- tell your friends about it. Sign them up. We've got lots more bells, whistles, forums, surveys, webcasts and fun planned for the coming months.
Enjoy the rest of your summer -- don't forget to hydrate.
Best,
Kate

The HA [Humor Activism] Corner
===========================================
Let's put some fun in our own fundamentalism! Use your imagination! Tell us some of the witty, gay civil protests you've done in our all-new HA [Humor Activism] Corner.
[Photo of Kate Clinton emceeing an auction]
We do recommend for example that you adopt a church in your neighborhood and while you're out on your round of Saturday errands, if you see a wedding going on, make a visit. When the minister gets to the part about "Are there any objections to this union?" stand up and make a little speech. You don't need to know the people. Something along the lines of, "I don't think anyone should be able to get married, until all people can get married." Then go off to the grocery store.
We'd love to hear a story about some young lesbian rappellers scaling the face of Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota and hanging the banner that says, "Four Men for Freedom of Choice."

Air America
Air America has placed a stunning Kate Clinton banner ad on their site. The response from Kate's banner on their home page has been overwhelming. It has given Kate an opportunity to reconnect with some of her students.
I just saw your ad on the Air America web site for the 25th Anniversary Tour. Congratulations and continued success!
I remember attending your class like it was yesterday. Learning and laughing. You taught us the two could go together. Thanks.
Hope this finds you well.

Sing Out Loud
Okay, yes... I did say sing, I guess to me your comedy, stories, and great wit to me is like music... it is also your great look which reminds me other great funny, singing women. Though this may sound like I don't know you you are, I beg to differ. I was there in the beginning, Michigan, Chicago, I have a picture of you and me. I'm not a stalker, a crazed fan, or just crazed, but I am a very devoted fan. So once again, keep telling us about the funny things about us, and the world as it is. By the way, the two gay guys sitting next to us at your last show were not impressed -- too much lesbian humor, too much women stuff -- I wasn't impressed with them either.
Love you,
Grace

Dear Kate,
I'm still laughing at your jokes from the Park West show in Chicago! Your delivery is impeccable! You look marvelous! I am so happy to be a lesbian. I'm looking for a job and a girlfriend not necessarily in that order. It's 96 degrees in Chicago!
Come back soon, I want to bring my straight girlfriends to see you.

Summer Reading
[What The L? book cover]
Dear Kate:
I can identify with the chapter about your dad... in my case my mom. She is 93 now, and she is very ill. She is in hospice care. I know she would have loved to hear your political humor. In the year the ERA was defeated in Florida, she campaigned with me to convince a Florida legislator that if the 1940s constitution of a small country in the Caribbean had the ERA on it, he too should vote now to have the ERA in the constitution of this adopted country of ours. Needless is to say, I was the organizer that came from Michigan to help pass the ERA in Florida and specifically to lobby that legislator in Spanish, but at that historical time, I let my mom do all the talking and talking she did. Unfortunately, we lost the ERA, but my mother, time and time again reminded me that with or without the ERA, I should always stand on my own feet. That was something for a woman from that generation. I will forever remember that day with my mother handing a copy of the old constitution from our country to that legislator, and asking him to explain his illogical conclusion against supporting the ERA here in the United States, with the notion that the ERA will drive women to have to use men's bathrooms.
In the midst of all, the historical moment my mom and I shared back then was beautiful. As beautiful as I can imagine the dinner that you described in your book with your dad. My mother doesn't raise her voice, and she does not use foul language. Like your dad did, my mom spoke softly and still (when she can) does, but let there be no mistake, she also, like your dad, carried a big stick - she taught me to "keep on talking." You dad could not have said it better. "Keep on talking" because silence, we all know, can kill. Clearly you learned that lesson well, and feminists all over the US thank you for it.
Please keep making us laugh. We need your wit and commentary on the human condition in the unsettling times that we are living. For a moment or two, your incredible command of the English language makes us all lighter in the heart - I know it does to me and for that I thank you.
With great admiration and wishing you were coming to Washington, DC soon. Best of luck in your 25th Anniversary tour... it seems like yesterday.
Thank you.
Marielena
P.S. I am sorry for the loss of your dad.
