New Year's Greetings
===========================================
Is it just me or is it lighter in here? I do feel like I have had a cement block lifted from my chest. I love it when they count all votes. And we have made that lovely solstice turn toward the light. Or it could be that my performance enhancement drugs are finally kicking in, but once again I feel like a Clinton from Hope.
Even though I think it’s bad form and luck to tell my New Year’s Resolutions, here goes. One has something to do with Penelope Cruz. Kidding. Not really.
I have gotten way too serious – about comedy, about politics, about everything –so I have decided to make more light – of comedy, politics, everything. To laugh more. Actually your laughter reminds me.. So thanks for that.
Life is short, so is my girlfriend. I'm turning 60 this year. How do I do it? You are what you eat, honeys. I resolve to have more fun. It really is the most radically subversive thing a lesbian can do. The whole world hates a happy woman. When we are happy together it can change a climate.
Happy New Year - Happy New Light! Make it.
Best,
Kate

Mom's Apple Pie, The Heart of the Lesbian Mothers' Custody Movement
While the beginnings of the LGBT Civil Rights movement was gaining momentum, the 1970s witnessed horrific custody battles for lesbian mothers. Mom's Apple Pie, The Heart of the Lesbian Mothers' Custody Movement revisits the early tumultuous years of the lesbian custody movement through the stories of five lesbian mothers and their four children.
Narrated by Kate Clinton, the documentary interviews the sons and daughters who were separated from their mothers, the mothers themselves, and one woman who made the difficult decision to flee with her children.

Gettysburg
Hello again Kate,
I've been trying to find time to send these pics to you. They're from your show/talk in Gettysburg in October. (I'm in yellow, Sabrina has long hair, and Jo's in the wheelchair.) I loved your show - as did my girlfriend Sabrina and our friend Jo. It was fantastic to finally get to see you in person. It was such a stressful year, that seeing you really lifted our spirits and gave us a break from our everyday b.s. we put up with...
So thank you for all you do - you brighten my day! I'm also looking forward to your next internet chat - I loved the first one!
Have a good holiday!

A New Paper from an Old Friend
Hello Kate,
I saw your newsletter in my inbox and just had to peek even though it's time to cook dinner and my dog is whining for “FOOD NOW.” (It won't hurt Mr. Pudgie to wait a moment.) My name is Beth. The last name has changed several times over this lifetime, but I am mostly known as Beth Maples-Bays in these parts. A million years ago, I helped produce your first performance in Knoxville at the Turn-KeyCenter in 1982. At that time, the lesbian community was still wow-ing over the 1978 Meg Christian concert which was the last lesbian cultural event to take place in this 'burg. I thought that was a shame, so at the suggestion of a skeptical director of UT's Women's Resource Center, I took on the project of producing your appearance. I had never produced anything in my life. I was 30 years old. I am now 54. I have been and done many things since.
We will unveil the Equality Herald in January (hopefully). It will be the first-ever newspaper devoted to bringing the news of the LGBT community specifically to East Tennessee.
I can't hear well enough to enjoy anything you do these days, but I know that you could never be anything other than hilariously and brilliantly funny.
By the Fires of Her Bright Spirit,
Beth Maples-Bays

Great to See You Again
Kate,
In the very early 80s I saw you perform in Syracuse, NY. You came to the Laurel Tree club after the show and I danced with you. I just saw you on hereTV and I realized how much I've missed seeing you. I'm not very involved in the community anymore but seeing you and the other comics tonight got me psyched to jump right on in again. Thanks! You look fantastic.
Susan ;)

My Vote's for Kate
Dear Kate,
What a great performance Saturday night! We saw you on stage in Long Beach 25 years ago, and we agree you have just gotten better over time. Thanks for being that beacon of hope for all of us who felt we had to live in the closet to protect our jobs, families, etc. Well, we are out now after
So many years of lying and doing just fine. Belly laughed during your show till we hurt and waved joyfully at the cameras. Aging and passing time do have some rewards.
Knowing you will probably not hang up your life, even after stepping off the stage, how about joining those wonderful women in Congress? My God, can you imagine what our world would be like if intelligent women ruled the country? You would have our votes. At the concert, I made the comment to my partner that, if you ran for President, I would vote for you. This was overheard by a woman seated behind me who said, "Why don't you write to her and tell her that?" So, that's what I'm doing. Hillary should be so lucky to have you in her company!
Whatever you choose, may blessings be showered upon you as a small reward for the joy and laughter you have brought to so many.
Keep walking to that different drummer...
Elaine Keltner
