Kate Responds To A Survey Request: How can you be part of the political movement?
For a number of summers, when I worked at the Vixen at the Pilgrim House in Provincetown, the manager was the indefatigable Pam Parmakian. Despite the late hours, early mornings, emergencies in the housekeeping staff, iffy electricity to the sound system and the delicacies of crowd control, she was always a fair boss to her staff and a great support to me. Despite her endless bookkeeping, ordering, management, scheduling duties she never lost a sense of fun. She claimed it was her Armenian roots. And she loved the beauty and history of her town. Her small boat with a 15 horsepower engine was called "To the Point" and she always managed a trip or two or week across the harbor to back beach with her beloved German Shepherd, named Lucky. That's what I called her anyway. The dog was lucky to be with Pam.
Over the years, in the off-season Pam became involved in lots of town committees - low-income housing, Ptown promotion, historic preservation, taxes. Some "off-seasons" she served on two or three community boards. A passionate civic learner, she would tell me about how she was facing her fear of public speaking by giving reports or speaking at town meeting. She recently told me that she has decided to run for Board of Selectman, the six-member board which runs Provincetown. She said she was doing it because, "I've got a lot of ideas and I love this town".
My girlfriend has a book on her shelves called "Freedom is an Endless Meeting". In fact it is. I am very grateful that people like Pam, who wanted to have a say in her town, took the first small steps of learning how the town works by being on boards and that she now is ready for larger responsibility of the bigger job. I'm so proud of her. She really shows how getting involved at the local level starts. You can do it too. Be a part. Start small. But start.

Outspoken Activist Of The Month: Kathy Kelly from Voices for Creative Non-Violence
Photo: logos/VoicesForCreativeNonviolence.jpg
Photo: kathykelly.jpg
Voices for Creative Nonviolence has deep, long-standing roots in active nonviolent resistance to U.S. war-making. Begun in the summer of 2005, Voices draws upon the experiences of those who challenged the brutal economic sanctions imposed by the U.S. and U.N. against the Iraqi people between 1990 and 2003
Kathy Kelly, 53, of Chicago, IL, is co-coordinator of Voices for Creative Nonviolence. She helped initiate Voices in the Wilderness, a campaign to end the UN/US sanctions against Iraq in 1996. For bringing "medicine and toys" to Iraq in open violation of the UN/US sanctions, she and other campaign members were notified of a proposed $163,000 penalty for the organization, and threatened with 12 years in prison.

Soulforce Equality Ride
Homophobia is globally pervasive, and no community or school escapes its reach. In 2006, during the inaugural Equality Ride, participants traveled to nineteen schools and engaged students, faculty, and administrators in conversation about the damaging effects of homophobic doctrine, the false notion that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender identities are sick and sinful. This year, the journey continues with fifty young adults going to thirty-two Christian colleges and universities. Two buses are taking the group on two distinct routes around the country in creative pursuit of social justice. In doing so, they are empowered to change countless lives. Love liberates the oppressed, redeems the lost, and resurrects the spirit.
Their journey has begun. Check out the latest updates from the road: Equality Bus defaced in Sioux City, IO. Arrests made at Notre Dame University followed by arrests MO, OK, and WI.

Hi there!
I'm sure that your inbox is always full of people who sing your praises, and I belong to that chorus as well. Oddly, I have somewhat of a personal affinity for you, not in the stalker way that you might think, but that we are from the same area, that of sunny Syracuse in the Great White North. You also knew my mother at one time (to get the name dropping part out of the way), you knew her as Kathy O'Connor, or Rabbit, and her friend Caroline, as Fred. I believe that you all attended summer camp together, and I also know Killer (I used to babysit for her kids). I devoured your book that you signed for Mom years ago, and have been hooked ever since. In another parallel, I also left the confines of the Catholic Church, and I hear that the residual twitch will go away before too long, but I now freely and off key sing my praises to the Unit with the rest of Unitarian Universalists everywhere.
I have yet to see you in person, because I live in San Diego and you rarely come here. I don't necessarily begrudge you that, because, well, I live here, and I understand. I wish that I could come see you in Palm Springs/Palm Desert, but my work schedule is grueling at best, and the commute is currently shaving years off of my life.
I have been writing myself for a bit, and I am sure that you also have a huge base of folks who also send you their ramblings, and in this I am no different. My friends think that it's good, and I'm just not sure, but that is really an issue for me and my shrink. So here it is. I hope that you take a few minutes to peruse, and I hope that I make you laugh. Or at least think about it. Any feedback would also be welcome. If nothing, so be it, but I do hope to catch you in person before too long.
I do think that you're fabulous.
Thank you,
ML O'Conner

"The poor man who is currently our president has reached such a point of befuddlement that he thinks stem cell research is the same as taking human lives, but that 40,000 dead Iraqi civilians are progress toward democracy," from a July 2006 column urging commentator Bill Moyers to run for president. In memory of Molly Ivins. Raise more hell.

Kate,
It was fun to see you last night - Seattle. I was in the balcony or I would have rushed to the stage with a tissue or maybe even a box of tissue. Right now I am trying to figure out how to get tissue to you in Palm Springs.
My absolute favorite story is:
In the 80's you were doing a show in Seattle promoted by our group, Uncommon Partners. I had the phone # for concert information so it rang often - the days of guerilla marketing.
So, I answered the phone, "Lesbian City Hall". You in town that day for the show, calling me. You immediately said "Hi, I would like to lick the mayor."
Of course I also remember having you ride on my motorcycle up the brick road, picking you up at the airport in my Studebaker coup.
And, speaking of 25 years. I will never forget Dino Sierp calling me one day in 1983 (I think) when I coordinated the Nat'l Women's Music Festival while living in Bloomington, Indiana. She was in charge of the Showcase. She said " there is a woman who wants to be on the showcase, her girlfriend is calling and said they would sleep in their van, but please to let them come". I told her if they are that into it - say yes. Then, I also remember dropping by to see some of the showcase and saw yo pacing, pacing, pacing the hallway to get ready for your show. I imagine you still do that. You were great that day all those years ago and you are amazing now.
I had some major brain seizures last April and still have lots of smaller ones so wasn't sure I could see the Seattle show. For months I was in a fog, confused and not sure of much. Luckily I get to heal and although heavily medicated (brain seizure disorder or adult onset epilepsy) am doing well. Lori, my partner of 6 years, and I live on a big boat on Lake Union which is downtown Seattle. It is fun and a wonderful place to heal. I am still able to work but part time going forward. I too keep track of the news and really enjoyed your take on things of course.
I remember more from the past than the present so am glad I could tell you a story...
Hugs and love,
Teri

Hi Kate --
I ran into your site and schedule on a site for Cape Cod. Believe it or not...I was a student of yours in 1977 at Jamesville-DeWitt High School...and now I live on Cape Cod. I noticed you'll be at the Crown and Anchor in P-Town at the end of May and I plan on attending one of your shows. I doubt you'll remember me but I'll be sure to say hello. I'm glad to see you are doing something you love....you were a great teacher!!
Thanks and I hope to see you in May --
