Addressing Younger Lesbians

My taskmastering webmistress has given me the assignment of writing a message for young lesbian activists for our newsletter. I am dawdling and despairing. Everything I’ve started smacks of some kind of rah rah, come on, get involved, start small, blar blar that's so inauthentic Eddie Haskell would blush.

See right there? As if young lesbians even know from Eddie Haskell. He was Wally’s ferret-faced friend on "Leave it to Beaver" - a totally unironic show title of my youth - who would lavish compliments on the Beave's mom, then go trash her behind her back.

What I have found is that I don't have enough young lesbians in my life. I suspect it's not just me. I have Myspace, OurChart young non-corporeal lesbians in my weblife. My traveling life has not been conducive to meeting and maintaining friendships with younger lesbians. In my teaching life, I had daily contact with young energy and I loved it. Not that I'm saying so come on over, I'll tell you about the old lesbian separatist days, play my Lesbian Concentrate LP, make the snacks. Although visiting your elders is not a bad thing.

So my message to young lesbians activists, and mostly to myself, is let's keep doing the political work we're all doing, and as we are doing that work, figure out ways to break the apartheid of age that isolates us. And I make very good oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.

Outspoken Organization Of The Month: League of Independent Voters

Photo: logos/indyvoter.jpg

The League of Young Voters is a national organization that supports young people to build power to solve problems in our communities. We work with young people who have been shut out of the political process to make politics fun, engaging, relevant, and meaningful.

We register voters, write and distribute voter guides, and lobby elected officials about issues that affect us ‘cause we want a progressive governing majority in our lifetime. We also like to have fun, throw parties and club nights, and laugh.

Kate,

What a great time during your appearance in Dallas last month. I hadn't seen you perform in person since the mid-90's in St. Louis. What fun to find out that we were both born on the 9th of November. I am honored to share a day with a woman I find so funny.

Thanks for the laughs and the great comments on the reality of our political situation.

Keep the laughs coming!!!

Kate,

Congratulations on the GLADD media award. It's about frickin time!

Seriously, I really love following your work and reading your newsletter, and I'm so glad I've gotten to know you and Urv, even just a little, through Donald, since I've been in NYC. It's been a real treat.

Chin up sister. It's not that long until January 2009 and this long national Bush-fueled nightmare will be over. (We made it through Nixon and Reagan, we can make it just a few more months.) I just remember every day the optimism and feeling of hope on election night 1992 and again at the Clinton inaugurals.

SCHMOOCHES.
