Catch it or Set Your Tivo - It's Come To This! 25th Anniversary Tour on Logo
===========================================

Photo: img/publicity/thumbs/logo-kate25th.jpg

Kate Clinton has been delighting audiences with her sharp wit for 25 years. Catch her hilarious silver anniversary tour, full of observations on aging, sex, and politics, in this cross between documentary and performance film, directed by Andrea Meyerson. Catch it on Logo on Sunday, July 8th, 4:00 PM EST. We hope you enjoy the show.

More info:

Dear Kate,

I want to tell you how great I think your 25th anniversary special is! I just watched it tonight on On Demand on Comcast cable (in case that kind of info helps you).

You are wonderful. I rarely look at Logo, but I was cruising through the channels and happened to end upon your special. I caught part of it as it replayed this morning and I found that I could see it On Demand, which I did tonight! I will go to LOGO's website and praise your show.

I first saw you (and met you) at a gay pride festival in Richmond, VA in the mid-'80s. I'm guessing it was '88? It was in a gay bar called The Pyramid. I'm dating it back to that year because in your special, you said you have been with your girlfriend for 18 years and that she is Indian. You were with Urvashi Vaid then and so I'm thinking that you still are! Congrats on that!

I'm so glad to reconnect with you after all these years and I will be reading, watching and listening to you all over again! Thank you for all you do and for giving me something political and FUNNY to watch tonight. I usually bog down in Countdown with Keith Olberman and in Salon.com, keeping my eye on Bush (just as you are the designated Bush watcher, per your show!) and his gang of lawless %$#&*@s.

Take good care and keep on doing what you are doing! It makes a big difference.

Alison

P.S. Love your hair!

Massachusetts Live
===========================================

After a busy weekend performing in Provincetown, Kate sat down with Massachusetts Live via email for a quick interview.

1. From where are you answering this E-mail? Please describe.
I am just returned from working Memorial Day weekend in Ptown and I am in our apartment in New York City. I miss the sweet air of Ptown.

2. How old were you when you discovered the power of poetry? What poem or poet sparked your interest?
We memorized poetry in my Catholic School and I loved the rhythm and logic of it. The skill helps me memorize my routines. "The Ballad of Sam McGee" was an early favorite.

3. What is it about poetry that connects with you?
I have always loved language and am blown away when a poet can work it. Because of my early oral experience of poetry, I only read poetry out loud. My favorite poet is Muriel Rukeyser and I love her book about poetry, "The Life of Poetry". She makes a poem an emotional and political experience.

4. Susan Kan thinks poets and comics have a lot in common? Do you agree? Why or why not?
A good one liner is like a good line of poetry - it's compact, imagistic, and expands when you add the water of thought.

5. You're a blogger! Awesome. Why did you join the blogging community?
My publicist, a very powerful lesbian from Staten Island insisted on it when she brought my website into the 21st century. I started blogging two years ago and try to add something at least once a week, again, at the "suggestion" of my publicist. If it's a "community" we are in more trouble than I thought.

6. What's the value of blogging to you?
Again, that publicist believes that it is good publicity. She's also made me the oldest person on MySpace. Twenty-five years ago, my best friend who had listened to me yammer on about wanting to "try standup comedy" booked me a club and said, "You're on in a month, I don't want to hear about it anymore." We should all have such good friends. She warned me about blogs - "Don't give it away." I think the definition of blog is "the opposite of poetry." Luckily I have an outlet for my thoughts in performance. Perhaps when I'm too old to travel, I'll settle into blogging.

7. What blogs do you read?
I read a blog synopsis on Slate and that's enough. Could I possibly sound crankier? I think it's the return to honking, loud, hot New York, that's doing it.

8. Who are the people who listen to Ann Coulter? Do they exist?
I have an Ann Coulter doll and I have push pins. Rabid young Republicans seem to enjoy her badass self. She doesn't believe half of what she says, but she does love the attention. And money. She's spawned such bilious practitioners, she really has to out-do herself to get press. Let's ignore her. I'm moving a pushpin right now.

9. Has it really been 10 years since the last time you visited the Valley? Why don't you come around to Lesbianville, USA more often?
That's not possible! Why it seems like only yesterday my name was up on the marque at that sweet theater at the top of the hill, "Kate Clinton, Woman on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown."

10. Who is your early favorite in the '08 presidential election?
I want a Democrat. To paraphrase Donald Rumsfeld, and I can't believe I am, "you go to the polls with the candidate you have, not the one you wish you had." I hope it's Hillary Clinton.

Speaking of The State Of Massachusetts...
===========================================

Perugia Press of Florence celebrated its 10th anniversary in June with a series of events featuring the poetry of the selected women artists whom they have published over the years.

The events are capped off by the sharp and comic insights of Kate Clinton in a special performance in Northampton. Kate does all the heavy lifting for the show and Bill provide an adequate excuse for her to avoid doing her bills. Symbiosis is so cool and makes for decent radio.

Northampton's Progressive Talk, WHMP! "The Bill Dwight Show" visited with Kate this month:

L.A. Weekly Salutes Kate as "Pick Of The Week"

Photo: LAWeekly.gif

When did you first know you were funny?
In first grade I lip-synced "I'm Getting Nuttin for Christmas" at a Holiday assembly and made Miss Como, the gorgeous single fourth grade teacher fall off her chair. That's when I absolutely knew.

Worst gig ever?
During an earthquake in Oakland, CA

Would you want to take Rose O'Donnell's place on The View?
In a New York minute.

How would you handle Elizabeth Hasselback?
Better than her husband handles a football.

What is the best thing about performing in the red states?
I feel like Bob Hope on a USO Tour. But without the putter.

Who do people say you look like?
A Campbell soup kid, the one on the left.

What's the comedy trend for 2007?
Bogus benchmarks. Contempt of Congress. Paisley capris.

What kind of humor offends you?
The unfunny kind. By the way, that Don Anus episode killed Don Ho

Last book read?
Blue Grit: True Democrats take Back the Politics from the Politicians by Laura Flanders

Why is your comedy important to the world?
People can laugh and think at the same time. Just as they are able to be against the Iraq War and support the troops at the same time.

Do you have groupies?
I have slalkers - slacking stalkers - they come to a show every sixteen months.

They say comedy comes from pain - is this the case with you?
Turns out, it's often gas.

Who did you take to the prom?
I went with Bob Petrello for half an hour, then we hopped in his VW and went to see Janis Joplin in concert at the Syracuse War Memorial. We were conspicuously overdressed.

Where do you want to be in five years?
Head Joke Writer for President Nancy Pelosi.

A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer: Writings to Stop Violence Against Women to be Released June 2007

Random House will release A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer: Writing To Stop Violence Against Women and Girls, a groundbreaking collection of monologues by world-renowned authors, including our own Kate Clinton and playwrights, edited by Eve Ensler and Mollie Doyle and commissioned by V-Day for the first V-Day: Until the Violence Stops festival, which took place June 2006 in New York City.

These writings are inspired, funny, angry, heartfelt, tragic, and beautiful. But above all, together they create a true and profound portrait of how violence against women affects every one of us. The book includes information on how to organize V-Day events and readings of the book. A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer is a call to the world to demand an end to violence against women.

In conjunction with the release, over 80 communities and colleges will present benefit readings of the book to raise money and awareness to end violence against women and girls.

Page One: K8T is reading... The Maytrees by Annie Dillard

Photo: MAyTrees.jpg

A gorgeous novel set in Provincetown. Toby Maytree first sees Lou Bigelow on her bicycle in postwar Provincetown, Massachusetts. Her laughter and loveliness catch his breath. Maytree is a Provincetown native, an educated poet of thirty. As he courts Lou, just out of college, her stillness draws him. Hands-off, he hides his serious wooing, and idly shows her his poems. In spare, elegant prose, Dillard traces the Maytrees' decades of loving and longing. They live cheaply among the nonconformist artists and writers that the bare tip of Cape Cod attracts. Lou takes up painting. When their son Petie appears, their innocent Bohemian friend Deary helps care for him. But years later it is Deary who causes the town to talk. In this moving novel, Dillard intimately depicts nature's vastness and nearness. She presents willed bonds of loyalty, friendship, and abiding love. Warm and hopeful, The Maytrees is the surprising capstone of Annie Dillard's original body of work.

I read what you said 'bout Falwell on your web site. Kudos baby, my sis was singing the same thing. She is my biggest supporter, sometimes she wears me like a banner. I just wanted to let you see what I wrote in my blog here on my space. It isn't as involved as yours and won't make you laugh but I'd hope it touches people.

"Jerry Falwell died today. I hear applause from earth abound. Before God he does now stand. Hate he takes there with him. Hate for lesbians like me. Unlike his hateful self I can show him mercy. I can forgive him for the hateful words he spat out. Now he understands. The true path to God has no hate. If gays weren't meant to be then there wouldn't be me. Do not give into the hate and spit upon his grave. Pray God shows him mercy. Be above his hateful ways."

Just read your article in the Advocate about rehab. As usual, you were right on the money. Rehab for racial slurs. What's next? That's enought to fill a small country, prefrerablly not ours. I really enjoy reading your columns as I am in the reddest part of florida and am surrounded by born-again ultra conservatives. They tolerate me because I remind them that Jesus was born a Jew and died a Jew and they should read the book "I was a teen age Jew" by Jesus Christ. Actually I'm one step above Catholics who they consider Pagans. My son-in-law is French-Canadian Cathlolic and I wouldn't trade him for anyone in the world. Keep up your keen observations and maybe one day we'll see some change in this country, you know like end war, wipe out poverty and give americans jobs.

Peace and grace,
Mimi Cohen

P.S. Thanks for adding me to your list of friends. I respect intelligent people.

Dear Ms. Clinton,

Last night I watched your 25th Anniversary Special with my daughter, who is now about the same age as I was when you taught me English at J-D High School. Given the nature of your material, I was anticipating some embarrassing questions like "Why would a tampon fly out when you sneeze?" (you'll understand when you're older, I'd tell her), or some technical questions like "How exactly does one chew nicorette gum down there?" (it melted, I'd explain)... but in the end her question was more horrifying than I could ever imagine:

"Mom," she asked, "How come your teacher looks younger than you?"

For that one I had no answer... All I know is that my daughter wishes she had you for a teacher.

Thanks for a wonderful show, and congratulations on 25 successful years. We'll look for you next time you're in Chicago.

Miriam Bauer
