Back to School Greetings
===========================================
For nearly thirty years I have been away from attending or teaching school. Nonetheless as the end of August approaches, I find myself eyeing fresh five subject notebooks in the grocery store, jonesing slightly for some new Bics, and feeling an unnatural fondness for knee socks. Newness, possibility is in the air, despite the lessening of the light.
As usual, this summer went way too fast, perhaps because I never managed to warp back to riding my bike with my pals all day long, practicing cannonballs at the community pool, eating excellent picnic burgers, reading in bed at night in shorty seersucker pjs all squeaky clean after a quick bath. With those carefree expectations, my adult summers are such a set up for disappointment.
September has always seemed a more appropriate time for New Year's resolutions. Here's one: I resolve to care less this year. I don't know about you but the chickenshit Democrats playing bipartisan charades and caving on the increased wiretapping just before their summer recess completely flattened me. I had forgotten that the corporate dictatorship in charge gives us the illusion of agency by letting us do our cute little democracy thingies. Again, it's like saying “I'm so disappointed in the patriarchy.” Silly me.
So sure I'll do my civic duties – benefits, donate, volunteer, work for Hillary, vote – but I'm keeping the eye on the prize and that is joy. Joy is not an easy woman to please, but as we are busy trying to save the world, we have to remember to savor each day. I am already stockpiling wax paper to press and iron my fall leaves collection. To caring less!
Best,
Kate

Are You Anxiously Awaiting the Results of the "Win A Date With Kate" Contest?
Kate is enjoying reading the many submissions. She has promised her final decision by September. Thank you all for your participation! Keep an eye out for next month's newsletter.
This month Edge Publications asked Kate " If you had a date coming over, what movie you'd pop into the DVD player that you think would get a girl in a romantic mood?” Here's Kate's response:
"First, I'd fire up some of my world-famous air popcorn, then pop Young Frankenstein into the DVD. Then there'd be about twenty minutes of shuffling around the six remotes and tearing out the back of the cable box andcalling the cable company and they'd tell me it has nothing to do with them butsome construction was reported in the area and finally I'd get it going and the CD would have been boxed wrong and Moonstruck would come on. By then the mood would have been ruined. And why no butter on the popcorn?"

Hello from Cologne
Hello Kate!
Thanks for joining my group of friends on Myspace!
Are you really Kate Clinton personally?!? I would love to correspond with you. Do you speak German?
My name is Kerstin Lass and I live in Köln (Cologne). I work for the West German Television.
1999 I worked for a special program called Phoenix. We broadcasted the G8-meeting, which took place in Köln. People here are used to celebrities - so I think Bill Clinton and all the others had a good time here. Is Bill Clinton your brother? We Germans like Bill Clinton - he is so natural, honest and human!
I went to your homepage and read, that you do so much for women's rights and liberation. I have been fighting for this too all my life. Please tell me more about your work - also about your work as a comedian and an actress.
Hope to hear from you soon.
All the best and good health.
Tschüss (Bye),
Kerstin.
Kerstin,
Sadly, I don't speak German and I've not been to Germany yet. I'm no relation to Bill Clinton, but I am all for Hillary Clinton for president. I'm so glad that Germany is leading the way with your woman president and apologize again for George's Bush's inappropriate neck rubs!!
It's great to hear from you! I love what the Internet has done for the international LGBT movement.
Auf auf!

The HA [Humor Activism] Corner
Photo: hacorner-kate.jpg
Ms. Clinton- I am a 17 year old lesbian living in Houston, Texas and I look at fellow gay youth and I'm sickened. The majority, not all, but the majority of gay youth in Houston anyway, only care about hanging out, clubbing, and screwing around. Which is why they many aren't caring about the issues. While my generation is so much more open, loving, and accepting of others, they aren't doing anything about the issues. I marched in Houston Pride Parade(my very first one, I was so happy!), and the majority of the people participating and volunteering were over 25. While there were many teens that had come to see the parade, they weren't too keen about helping out, going to meeting, fundraising, awareness and such. For some reason, my generation has simply no get-up-and-go unless they're going to a bar or nightclub. I am probably the only one of my generation who knows who Lily Tomlin is and what's she's all about. So I guess the whole point of this message is that I'm not sure the youth of America, even GLBT youth of America, are going to be spearheading the next Queer Revolution. I feel so much pressure to do even half of what groups such as the Lesbian Avengers have done. I'll try, but I can't do it alone. Lesbians are a bit more pro-active about what we want, but I'm afraid my generation may be the end. If you disagree, maybe you could come to Houston and speak. I know about a hundred lesbians who would enjoy that, myself included. -AJ
Dear AJ,
Don't despair!! The great news is that without any competition, you can be a leader! Don't worry about the followers right now, just investigate the things that are happening in your town, your state, your area. Hook up with a national organization and find out what they want to do in your area. I think statewide organizations are where it's at. Contact the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and plan to come to their Creating Change Conference in Detroit in Februray - brrrrrrrrr - you will meet lots of activists your age and find that you are not alone.
Political tides ebb and flow and it seems right now that you are in an information gathering mode. You can make a difference!
Hope to see you Detroit!!
Best,
Kate

Hello from Cumberland, Maryland
Hi Kate,
I just sent you a "friend request". My daughter and her girlfriend already have you on their list. They are huge fans of yours. They saw you in person last year in Gettysburg, PA and can't stop talking about how great you were. My daughter Ruth has also "chatted" with you several times - what a great treat for her! They have all of you CDs (and let me borrow them if I promise to be extremely careful with them). I would be honored if you accept my friend request. (By the way, we're the same age - are you looking forward to the 60's?).
Thanks for you time,
Mary Ann
