And The Winner Is.........
===========================================
What an amazing pleasure to read the entries to our Win a Date With Kate contest! It was like E-Harmony without the homophobia!
First, I thank you all for your sweet respect of my 20 year relationship and I especially enjoyed those who invited Urvashi to join us on our date. You guessed right if you thought our date would be more fun if she were with us. You might not have guessed that she would make us end the night with a double espresso and then punk music with a pungra beat. One single woman asked us to help her cruise and get a date.
Many of your entries were also love poems to your home cities. I have duly noted your favorite restaurants, walks, views, and girl bars. Your perfect dates were invitations to softball games, poker, beach fires, mass with cocktails after, dates including 5 year old sons, scrabble, lots of ice cream, lots of mojitos, 12 step programs, the Bisbee copper mines, Greensboro art galleries, breakfast in Memphis, BLTs on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, lobster in Ptown, a movie in Montpelier, the Huntington Gardens in San Marino, a hike in Boulder, homemade dinner in Georgia, an Indigo Girls concert, snacks on a Lake in upstate New York, an Indian dinner cooked by very own girlfriend, then extreme Boggle. One gay man even wanted a date! One woman suggested time travel back to the Duchess bar in NYC in 1978. Love those lesbians in their wayback machines!
Reading your entries reminded me of giving writing assignments when I was teaching high school English. Like those essays, your approaches were so creative - some seductive letters, some historical narratives of your towns, some reminiscences of early shows, some clever disguises from friends who were amazed that anyone would want a date with me [you know who you are], some descriptions of partners who had passed and some not even a request for a date!! Thank you all for the time you put into your entries.
Though my people tell me I must chose one, I wish we could just name a centrally located city, a date and time and all have a giant Moonie type date. But that would change the specialness of the one-on-one date thing, and turn it more into a festival, so never mind.

Congratulations to Helen Elizabeth Duffy.
When Helen received the news she exclaimed: "As we said in Catholic grade school... 'jesus, mary, and joseph' I am thrilled ....nothing expresses my astonishment. thank you."

The Winning Submission
"I lost my partner in 2005 (December) We were the one and only for 38 years. We have seen your shows 3x in Columbus and attended Clinton’s inauguration in Washington and the Gay et al reception there. I saw you again and was so excited when I spoke with you, I kept saying how much I love you, but I couldn’t remember your name (I kept twirling your name badge). I am alone now but I will always have you in my heart. From an admiring recovering Irish Catholic... you know what I mean."
- Helen Elizabeth Duffy... age 73
Kate and Helen will meet in Columbus, Ohio on 5/13/08. Both are looking forward to spending some time together.

Back To The Principal - What did The School Do?
"They didn't do shit actually. By the way I go to Olympia High School in Olympia, WA. It's a hella long ways away from you haha. I went to the principal and said that I wanted to know the reason that your website was blocked and he said that gay/lesbian issues weren't in the teaching book so there's no point to allow those websites in school. I can't believe this crap! I'm so pissed it's not even funny. He asked why I needed to access the website and I said that I was doing research, of which I was. I was going to use you in my heroes assignment. We're supposed to write about our hero and you're mine. And he said that if I really wanted to write about a dyke that I could do that in my own time."

In Passing - A Film By Kate Fitzgerald
Photo: 7466534.jpg
Kate Clinton is a guest star in this urban Love Story between two women set in New York City. Vanessa Kelly and Julia Garrison portrayed by Veronica Mittenzwei and Lisa Rothe respectively. The film explores the dynamic of their relationship, how they reveal the treasures of their hearts and souls to each other and ultimately part, perhaps never to meet again. It is a universal story that many of us have lived through, cried over and grown from. In Passing... intimates that loving another is the surest path to knowing ourselves and that love always transforms us whether we experience incredible joy or deep sorrow. As the character of Julia reflects, "...One good thing about life is that it gives us the chance to love over and over again..."

Outspoken Organization Of The Month: The Astraea National Lesbian Foundation
Photo: logos/astraea.jpg
Astraea began in 1977, when a small group of women created a multi-racial, multi-class, feminist foundation in order to address the lack of funding for women-specifically lesbians and women of color. They believed that even the smallest of gestures, when combined, could create, nurture and strengthen significant social change. And they were right.
Today, Astraea is the only foundation in the world solely dedicated to supporting LGBTI organizations in both the U.S. and internationally. We raise funds and issue grants based on the belief that all women can participate in the philanthropic process-from giving to grantmaking. Governed by a national board of directors, and run by a staff of thirteen, Astraea is primarily supported by individual members.
In the face of scant resources and at times, physical danger, Astraea grantees are fueling the movement for social change in villages, cities and towns around the world. A miniscule 0.3% of all foundation dollars is directed toward lesbian and gay issues. Astraea exists to fund these issues.
Formerly the Astraea Lesbian Action Foundation, in 2003, we became the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice. Our new logo, much like Astraea grantees, grows, spirals and emits powerful energy. It has no sharp edges or precise borders. That's because true social change is propelled forward, from person to person, community to community, continent to continent.

The Women Innkeepers of Provincetown are honored this year to bestow this prestigious Woman of the Year Award to Kate Clinton, writer, activist, and comedian, for the great work she has done in raising political awareness and encouraging other women to live honestly and consciously. We wish to honor her twenty-five years of bringing laughter to the thousands of women who have listened to her unique perspective, and whose lives have been changed by her words.

HATCH
Ms. Clinton,
Thank you so much for your correspondence. I am still hoping you will come and see what Houston has to offer if you've never been. I am with a few organizations, and I still plan to volunteer with Houston's Pride Parade next year. There are pictures in my album. I volunteered with Pride Houston and I even worked the festival. I'm with AssistHers, an organization that assist lesbians with debilitating illnesses, HATCH, the Houston Area Teen Coalition for Homosexuals, and The Women's Group, it's a houston feminist group that's been meeting for 25 years. I feel all special because I'm the youngest and they baby the hell out of me! But with all that I do, I at times still feel inadequate. I'm not sure I'll ever know, when what I'm doing is enough. And I unfortunately won't be able to make it to the conference because I'm a full-time college student, meaning that I can't afford the trip and I'd miss classes, but I'll ask someone I know is going to take lots of notes and lots of pictures.
Again, thank you,
-A'Ja

Be My Friend On Myspace!
Wow! I'm honoured to be on your top list of friends. You know one thing that is REALLY over looked... is same sex binational couples. I am British and my partner is from Minneapolis, MN USA! All we've wanted to do for the last 5 years is find a way to move back to the states. My partner, Julie misses home. And I miss it too. I love Minneapolis. It's just so sad that the US will let a foreigner into the country if he/she is in a relationship with someone of the opposite sex from the US. I think they only need to meet a couple of times and don't have to know each other very long. But Julie and I have been together for over 5 years. Our relationship is FOREVER! We are very devoted to each other and intend on growing old together. But the US won't let us come back home. It's really heartbreaking. We have had to spend everything we had (plus borrow) to get Julie over here. But atleast in England, if you can prove you've been together for 2+ years you can be granted an extension. And after 2 more years (if your still together), the foreign partner can stay indefinitely . England is good in that way. Plus we have Civil Partnerships now (which is the closest thing to marriage we can get). I would love to have our story told someday. I was thinking in the lines of Oprah or something. We'd love to help pave the way for others in our situation. Maybe one day things will change. Anyway... thanks for listening. Sorry to bore you too much!
Peace, love and respect
Tameka and Julie xx (living in the UK)

Michigan Shoutout!
Hi Kate,
You have been an inspiration with your humor for years. I first saw you in the late 80's with my former partner. My current partner and I have together for 14 years and haven't missed an Ann Arbor show of yours.
One of the fortunate and unfortunate things that have happened to me was losing my former partner last December 2006 in a plane crash. She was on a rescue mission. I was in the hospital in Ann Arbor with Leukemia and was almost died on the day of her Memorial Service. As soon as I was home from the hospital I received a laptop from partner and I immediately signed up for your newsletter. It was and still is the best therapy (laughing).
My Mom was one of nine children, five them were gay including my Mom but she came out two weeks before she died. My Mom's youngest sister, Judy is who you look like to me. If you look at my carepage my Mom is ther, she looks somewhat like my Aunt Judy.
Thanks for the laughs,
Peg McPhee Gordon

Celebrate Being Out!
Kate -
Thanks for your thoughts on the worthiness of just trying to find oneself a little joy. Whenever I hear the well-intended talking about wanting to protect our community and watch them get a little too off on relaying all the bad things that happen to us as proof of how horrible it is to be gay and how much they need donations to keep protecting the weak, beat-up, pathethic gays, I feel sad for a moment and wish that there was a group working to reach that golden ring just past "tolerate" where we're celebrated because of just how fantastic we are. I want a group that is so spreading the good gay word that the number of participants in Natl Coming Out Day increases by the millions - because people think it's just the best thing to be gay and they want to be gay too. Celebrate, celebrate, celebrate - because it's good, real good, to be gay. :) Just as activists who "demand peace now" seem to have missed the mark just a bit, only focusing on all of the bad, bad, ugly things will wear you out fast. Isn't communal joy where we're trying to go, anyway? Thanks for putting that happy little reminder out there. Here's to just buckets and buckets of joy awaiting you around every corner,
:) Anna Deligio
