EDGE NY ONLINE
===========================================

Photo: edge_header_left.gif

Please discuss your work in a pre-PC era when certain words, actions and images were taboo (and before political correctness was a trendy phrase and an academic movement).

PC is a nicer way of saying shut-up. I'm not sure the exact year when PC started, but I don't think I caused it. Which would have been cool. In the early 80s, my being was taboo, so whatever I said was a bonus.

What was it like living, working and creating through the dawn and expansion of the PC era? What is it like today? (Are there any topics still off-limits, or does being asked to avoid certain things make you want to deal with them even more?)

The era of PC began with the authoritarian, "Hey, don't eat that apple." Some eras have been better at it than others. The Jacobins, the Nazis, some "Christian" fundamentalists. Whenever I try to be mindful of the local mores, I turn into a bawdy fishwife. Thank god for the local mores.

Is censorship and the concept of PC the same thing? If so, how? If not, what are the differences?

Generally, and here I dare to speak for all people, when someone tells me not to do something that's all I want to do. We had to remove all the halogen lightbulbs in our house because wanting to touch them kept me awake at night.

Discuss any experiences with censors, protestors or those otherwise opposed to your work (as it applies to gay subject matter).

I've been banned on the Texas radio airwaves. Thank you very much. On my last CD, I thought it would be funny and helpful to pre-bleep the two "fucks". It caused quite a stir. Or it might have just been that guy in South Dakota with a very big email habit. He was mad. In the '80s, it was all, "You can't do that gay stuff." Now, it's all, "Hey I thought you were going to do more gay stuff."

Is there anything that you feel should not be said or done?

Still, please, no plaids and stripes. Other than that, it's not for me to say. Because generally, it will come back and bite me in the butt.

Is there a difference when certain subject matter is addressed through verbal and visual mediums?

Verbal mediums think they are visual and vice versa. It's a delicate interplay and really no different. I might not be into floating cow heads in blue liquid, but that's just me. And me, I'm the happy medium.

You Are My Hero!

Kate,

You do not need to post this, but I want you to know that I am SO personally disappointed that you were not on the top 40 on the Advocate poll? Both my partner and I voted for you.? You are such a wonderful woman, a great inspiration, and have been an amazing force in the GLBT community.? I know that you probably do not pay much attention to these kinds of things, but I just wanted you to know that you are appreciated, respected and loved.

Alicia

How Sweet It Is!

It was a recent concert on TV - it was so great. The first real lesbian thing I ever did - I think I was 14 or so at the time - was to see you perform at a show which was recorded for your first album. I know this because I can hear my goofy laugh on the record. A friend of mine who had you for a teacher (I think?) brought me. And I've been gay ever since. And enjoyed your comedy ever since as well.

Susan and Talia

Sweet Inspiration

Hello Kate!

I met you after your show for the "It's Come To This!" tour in Tucson. I am an aspiring comic myself, and have been a fan of yours for quite some time. (how long? I heard your first show on cassette, that's how long..LOL) Well, you inspired me to want to do stand up in the first place, and I got my shot last night at a local gay comedy show. It was a last minute thing, and I didn't even think I had any material ready. But, it went really well, people laughed, and no one got hurt. (that I know of) Just wanted to say thanks for inspiring a gay guy in Phoenix to make people laugh. T'care.

A New Fan!

Kate,

Last night, I was changing channels and came across you on Logo. I didn't know about the channel.

I am a 60 year woman, married, with two granddaughters, who live in Arizona. I was raised a catholic and went to catechism with my younger sister through high school. On New Year's Day 1966, my mother dragged her three kids to church. I asked her why we were going to church on New Year's Day? She answered to "celebrate the circumcision? of Christ"? ! !? I said I thought that was a ridiculous reason to go to church, so I quit. She wasn't happy, but I was. I didn't know it at the time, but, I was pregnant - from the night before.

I have been a big fan of Robin Williams since his days on Mork and Mindy. He's fast, clever, with? Quite an imagination. He makes me laugh OUT LOUD until I think I am going to throw-up. I enjoy listening to people making other people laugh... such a healing pursuit. Not to mention his ability as an actor and his financial assist for Christopher Reeve after his accident. I also like Louis Black... I like crazy!

Now, I discover Kate Clinton.....you had me laughing so hard, the tears were streaming down my face.I thought I would wake my husband and the neighbors ! This has been a rough year for us, income dropping, personal problems. So much so that we wonder if it's going to improve or are we going to go under and lose what we have built.

For me it is a blessing to be entertained by someone I can relate to... you talk about things I have actually experienced...pubic hair getting caught in sanitary belts... I thought I'd die of laughter... Thank you for what you do, I love your sense of humor. Would love to see you come to Southern California -Temecula.

A New Fan,
Karen Mazzotta

Hi Kate,

Thanks for the photo op in DC. I've enclosed the 20 year old picture at the March on Washington 1987 and the one from the GALA. It was a full circle moment for me... I've always loved the '87 picture.

Rosalyn and I really enjoyed your hosting! It was a wonderful event made even more memorable by your tremendous wit. We'd love to see you again. Just these darn travel schedules. We arrived home last night but she had been on the road 21 days. I leave for Long Beach, CA tomorrow and she has two more trips this week. Have a blast during P-town events!

Hope you enjoy the photos.

Sincerely,
Mendy Martin &
