Happy Birthday Kate Clinton!
===========================================
Kate Clinton looks to the future on her 60th birthday. CommuniKate asks Kate, "What does the future mean to you and what are you looking for?"
As always I look and work for an end to the oppression of women, which will mean no more war or Jenny Craig. I remain optimistic, despite current idiotic evidence to the contrary. Since I believe this is my only life, my only day, I prefer optimism. I am a gray haired lesbian Polyanna.
----------------------------
A Sneak Peak Into Kate's Birthday Wish List:
A gift you made!
A homemade dinner and a night of really lots of laughing (her favorite thing)
Books (novels)
Leather gloves
Lovely pens or writing tools
Eyeglass frames
Bulbs for the garden in PTown
Dark chocolate
Beautiful blank writing journals
Hats
Lifetime health insurance!
World peace
End to the oppression of women worldwide.
Art
No censorship
This is just an FYI - please do not send gifts!
----------------------------
Greetings to All, from Kate Clinton
Thanks for all your kind wishes for my sixtieth birthday. I celebrate this new year with all of you - I could not have done it without you.
So far I am enjoying my sixties enormously. It's just been a few weeks, and I still haven't gotten my hoped-for gift of the end of oppression of women. Perhaps it was delayed in the males.
One of my favorite birthday gifts was a deck of gender cards. There was no note in the package, but I bet it was from a certain Scorpio sister who also just turned 60. When the boys play the gender card, the game is called Life. When the girls play, it's Old Maid.
With your good wishes, I intend to keep kicking ass and taking names!!

Queercents: Ten Money Questions for Kate Clinton
===========================================
1. Is there truth to the saying do what you love and the money will follow?
I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A PROFESSIONAL, PAID WAVE-WATCHER AT HERRING COVE, BUT SO FAR NOTHING. DITTO, NADA FOR DOING CROSSWORD PUZZLES. YET. SO I AM GRATEFU AND AMAZED THAT I DO GET PAID FOR MAKING PEOPLE LAUGH.
2. What is your most significant memory about money?
WRITING A CHECK FOR MY FIRST SEMESTER OF COLLEGE TUITION - IT WAS ALL THE MONEY I'D EARNED - AND BURSTING INTO TEARS. AND MY DAD PATTING ME ON THE BACK.
3. What is your worst habit around finances?
MY EXTRAVAGANT GIRLFRIEND TELLS ME I'M TIGHT AS A NEW SHOE. WE ARE A LOVELY BALANCE.
4. You've been a volunteer emcee for hundreds of fundraising dinners.
Do rich people really like giving their money away?
IT'S A LEARNING PROCESS. I THINK GAY PEOPLE ARE GIVING THEIR MONEY AWAY MUCH MORE STRATEGICALLY - WE WANT SOMETHING IN RETURN. WE AREN'T IMPRESSED WITH APPROVAL ANYMORE. MAYBE WE SHOULD TRY GAY TITHING - SEE #7.
5. What was the worst service job you worked to subsidize your income
during those early years?
I HAD A WINDOW WASHING BUSINESS WITH MY PARTNER. IT WAS CALLED, "I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW." SHE HATED HEIGHTS AND I KEPT BIDDING ON HUGE HOUSES.
6. Do you lease or own your car, and why?
I ONLY HAVE A CAR IN PTOWN - MY CURRENT VEHICLE IS A THRICE OWNED JEEP.
7. What did your father teach you about money? How were these lessons
different from those of your mother?
IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT, DON'T SPEND IT. MY MOM HAD AN ENVELOPE OF "MAD MONEY" FOR SPECIAL TREATS. I LOVED WHEN SHE CRACKED THAT ENVELOPE. NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH THOSE PASTEL SUNDAY CHURCH ENVELOPES.
8. How many times have you done the Olivia Cruise gig? Are vacations
with a ship full of lesbians worth the money?
I'VE BEEN ON FIVE CRUISES AND FOUR LAND-BASED ADVENTURES WITH THE OLIVIETTES. I ALWAYS TELL GALS TO TRY IT - IT'S LOTS OF FUN AND YOU MIGHT WANT TO TRY MORE.
9. Is there a price to pay for being funny?
MY DAILY OBJECTIVE IS TO MAKE THREE PEOPLE [ONE FAMILY, ONE AQUAINTANCE, ONE STRANGER] LAUGH OUT LOUD. NOT FOR PAY, JUST FOR PLEASURE.
10. If you could buy one thing right now what would it be?
I'D LIKE A CAPPUCINO FROM JOE'S COFFEE IN PTOWN. DEEELISH AND EXCELLENT FOAM. CAN I GET SOMETHING FOR YOU?

Dear Kate,
Thank you so much for the contacts and for taking the time to respond. I really appreciate it! I would like to share with you that we Georgetown students have WON!!! Georgetown has now joined the ranks of the very few catholic universities to have an LGBTQ resource center and educational programs about the LGBTQ community on campus. It was a hard campaign and the university was very resistant, but good triumphed over evil, to put it o-so-cliche-like. Thank you very much for your advice, and best to you!
Sincerely,
Julia Shindel
Julia first wrote:
Dear Kate,
My name is Julia Shindel and I am a student at Georgetown University. On September 9th, a hate crime occured on our campus; one student beat up another student because of his gender expression (pink shirt) and the fact that he was gay. He was hospitalized. The matter was covered up by the university for 3 weeks, and now we students are working tirelessly for what could have prevented this in the first place... an LGBTQ resource center, which the university is prohibiting. Last Thursday, we were barred from entering one of our own buildings by security officers; we wanted to deliver a stack of signatures and a shirt to the President. I heard you speak at Gettysburg College last year and you really made an impact on many minds that day, and I wanted to ask you if you would help us by joining our movement. We are holding a rally during which we would like to have some prominent speakers. Would you be interested?
Thank you for your time,
Sincerely,
Julia Shindel

With limited resources, the Fund supports scholars invested in the interrogation of racism, homophobia, and heterosexism, and encourages young people to take action in the city’s various community organizing outlets. Photo: 031242289XM.jpg
"When Frances Shore moves to Saudi Arabia, she settles in a nondescript sublet, sure that common sense and an open mind will serve her well with her Muslim neighbors. But in the dim, airless flat, Frances spends lonely days writing in her diary, hearing the sounds of sobs through the pipes from the floor above, and seeing the flitting shadows of men on the stairwell. It's all in her imagination, she's told by her neighbors; the upstairs flat is empty, no one uses the roof. But Frances knows otherwise, and day by day, her sense of foreboding grows even as her sense of herself begins to disintegrate."

XM Radio!
Hi Kate,
I discovered you only recently through the wonder of XM radio in my car. I'm a bad lesbian. Bad, bad lesbian, poorly socialized, totally clueless about gay society, so on top of your wonderful comedy your newsletter is also making nice little dents in my awareness.
I adore your wit and look forward to lots more.

There Is a God!
Kate,
Well this year was going to be it. My partner of 14 years and I were actually going to go to women's week. This was our year. It is becoming much harder to get away. My parents live with us, and my father's Parkinsons is getting so much worse. He is having so much trouble walking, I am afraid to leave my mother here alone to pick him off the floor. Anyway, I'm not writing to you about my problems.
I got to see your 25th anniversary special on Logo again. The 4th time and you still make me laugh til I cry and I'd like to thank you for the beginnings of incontinence. I'm in my mid 40's I thought that didn't happen until the 60's.
So instead being able to see you in person, I was able to watch and laugh during a not so good time here. One of these years, we will get to women's week. Just hope you are still performing. Don't ever retire. The world needs to laugh til they cry.
If there is a God, Thanks for Kate Clinton

Kudos To Lexington
Dear Kate,
My girlfriend Libbie Sherman and I missed your performance due to a previously planned trip to South Africa. Libbie worked as Volunteer Coordinator for JustFundKY up until two days before the performance. So we were thrilled to return to your kudos for Lexington (entirely mutual as they are). Rachel and Gloria are our dearest friends and it's swell of you to mention them. Thanks again for your kind words about our chosen home. We'd love to welcome you back any time... and will welcome anyone who reads your words and puts them into action.
All best,
