01.19.09: SAGE THE DATE!
===========================================
Just as the Mayan priests were called in to sage Machu Pichu after George Bush's ten minute visit to the ruins, you are being called to sage the White House after George's eight years of ruinous residency. Let's banish those evil spirits the night before the Inauguration.
Watch for more details of our spontaneous, ingenious spectacle. Sage the Date! Tell your friends.

Margaret Cho and lesbian comic Kate Clinton go head-to-head in conversation covering Margaret's career, the presidential race, Republican sex scandals and Kim Jong-il's hair.
IN THE LIFE's January episode, Wide Stance, will feature a diverse collection of stories, from a look at a film that examines biblical language about homosexuality, to a photo essay of men dancing together. We'll hear what it's like to be a gay rapper, take an unflinching and historical look at public sex and entrapment, through the lens of the Senator Larry Craig scandal. Throughout the show, the ever-controversial Margaret Cho, and lesbian comic Kate Clinton, will go head-to-head in conversation.

Dear Kate,
I really want to add you into my LGBT Project for school and I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions. It's my Culminating Project for High School. We're required to complete a project of our choice to graduate high school. I chose to do my project on the LGBT Community. Part of my project is helping our district come up with a way to include LGBT related issues into our curriculum. Also, I'm compiling a mini-book of coming out stories, personal stories, PFLAG stories, student perspective writing on the issue, etc. Seeing that you're one of the people that really inspires me to make my voice heard I thought it would be absolutely perfect if I could put you in the book.
Kaliegh
--
Kaleigh,
You can ask me five questions - send them to me and I'll respond.
Here are your questions -
1. Where is your school? How big?
2. What are you doing next year?
3. How would you rate your school on LGBT issues - supportive faculty? Community? fellow students?
4. Are you LGBT or an ally?
5. How the heck did you hear about me?
And thanks,
Kate
--
Kate-
1. Olympia, WA. I got to Olympia High School. The school is roughly 1850 students. It's cramped.
2. Next year I'm helping my Principle set up the LGBT month and national coming out day. I'm also a junior next year.
3. Faculty- In our school our faculty really doesn't do anything to support our group. We used to have a GSA but the teacher that ran our GSA left for most of this year and she just came back. I'm going to talk to her about getting the club back up and running. Community- Well, for the most part the community is fine. We're by Seattle as you know if awesomely filled with gay pride. Fellow students- oh jeez.... That's opening a can of worms. Our student body is extremely homophobic and unaccepting. We tried to set up posters around the school and they got torn down. Even though we had another poster underneath that said that what they had
done was a hate crime.
4. Haha. I'm lesbian. Ewww heterosexuality.... Just kidding.
5. The first time that I had ever heard of you, I was listening to The Lesbian Podcast and you were a guest on it. I thought you were absolutely hilarious. From there I looked you up on youtube and googled you. heh

COMING SOON: Climate Change: The CD
Photo: http://kateclinton.com/img/climatechange-70px.jpg
In a climate when most truth is inconvenient, trusted veteran weathergirl/comic Kate Clinton tracks the rapidly changing affronts of homophobia, the high atmosphere clashing of religious and secular systems, the aftermath of hurricanes of government neglect and the low pressure of despair. Unlike other reporters, content to report from the comfortable studio of complacency, she reports in her little yellow slicker of comedy, buffeted by the winds of war, almost blinded by the driving sleet of sexism. Based on her daily analysis, and long range study of weather patterns, she forecasts the high pressure of working for peace and that it will indeed get lighter toward the daybreak of justice.
This long-awaited CD is coming soon - stay tuned for details!

Kate Clinton, NCLR and Poker
Photo: http://kateclinton.com/img/poker.jpg
Dear Kate,
I was one of the women who purchased a football jersey from your annual touch football game during Women's week this past October. I told you when you autographed it that I would wear it whenever I played in a poker tournament. I played in The World Series of Poker Ladies Event this past Saturday (12/15) and wore the shirt as promised. I did field a lot of questions from some of the other players and sent them to the NCLR website to get more information. I sent you an e-mail with the link in case you'd like to see the pictures. Just wanted to drop you a line to let you know that I kept good on my promise.
:) Michelle Brooks
P.S. I'll keep wearing the shirt to poker events; I did not win, but had my best finish at a WSOP event to date so now it is certainly my lucky shirt!
--
Michelle,
Thanks so much for expanding the brand!! You are wonderful. Love to hear the reactions you get when you spell out the NCLR.
And as much as I'm impressed, you have no idea how you have raised me in the estimation of my publicist and promoter, Michele Karlsberg. If you'd met the pope while wearing the jersey, she would not have been impressed.
But this. . . .
Now you're talking.
Best,
Kate
--
Dear Kate,
You are too sweet! You have been an advocate and a hero in the eyes of many; I was just doing my little part to get the word out. Once I explained where the shirt was from and talked about NCLR, I think it may have intimidated some of the players; making bluffing and then stealing a few poker pots that much easier. One player even remarked that she was a little afraid of me. It certainly helped my poker image! It also allowed me to broaden the minds of those who have a certain perception of what lesbians look like. People have often remarked to me that I couldn't be a lesbian because I am too "girly". I usually reply by saying that I wouldn't be a lesbian if it were not for my sperm allergy. This usually is met by a confused look followed by a nervous laugh. I received one such comment while at the tournament. which allowed me the opportunity to explain that just as straight people do not define themselves by their sexuality, neither do most lesbians. We are multi-faceted people just like everyone else. What we do have as our benefit is the experience of living in a world where we are faced with the knowledge that there are people who do not like us simply because of who we love. For many of us, this results in becoming more self aware and having a deeper understanding of and empathy for our fellow man. In short, lesbians make the world a more gentle place for eveyone. After saying all of this, I added...then again, there are those we choose to become lesbians just because they want the toaster! I'm up for my 15 year award which I think is a convection oven! Everyone laughed, but I think I got my point across. Keep doing what you are doing Kate and take comfort in the fact that there are many of us who walk the same path. We are sisters all, and in the end, the world is a better place because we gave a damn!
Hope to see you in P-Town next year during Women's Week,
Peace, Michelle

Over 2,000 MySpace Friends!
Kate-
Thank you for adding me:) I'm just recently getting to know more about all the wonderful lesbian comedians there are out there and I saw a show on LOGO about you and Sabrina Matthews and a few others and realized that I've heard a lot of your work before. My ex-girlfriend had a friend that made us a CD of all lesbian comedians and that CD was absolutely hilarious! Like I told Vicky Shaw thank you to all of you for having the courage to be openly gay and being so strong for those of us who can't be as open as we would like to be. I live in North Carolina in a tiny backwater town and being openly lesbian here can get you shot. I hope one day to move to Chicago or California but as of now I stay for my wonderful girlfriend whom I'm proposing to soon (here's hoping that goes well, lol) Anyways thanks a lot for being so funny and for being you:)

Kate,
Thanks for the add, but even more so, thanks for standing up and speaking out. I feel like we Americans are socialized to not stand up for the rights or beliefs, except of course the survivalists that we have here, but that is really maybe a little more frightening.
I feel like more of us need to figure out what it is that we can do to stand up and let our voices be heard. A book is my path, and I'm hoping that it has a positive impact.
Thank you for your influence and inspiration.
It seems lately that most of the people that have been making me move on and ahead, have been women. Funny, but typical, Maya our mother the EARTH and the Poet, my mother. Woman have always had a huge influence on the direction of my life.
Have a great New Year.
Dustin

Hi Kate,
My gal pal's sister got me started on this. Now I want to be your friend. I am subscribed to your e-newsletter. So happy to discover you in the cyber world. I haven't been able to attend one of your concerts in a few years. Last time was Ann Arbor at the Ark. Since then, Debbie died from cancer. Also, Phyllis gone since 2001. Gail and I still living near Flint in a town called Flushing. Going thru old albums the other day, a note fell out of one of your record albums. It was a thank-you note from you and Trudy for staying at our house. You and Trudy schlepped over to Flint to perform for us gals at our little rented hall in 1982. I forever tell everyone that knows of you, "well Kate Clinton slept in my bed." So much joy I receive by reading your website/blog.
Sincerely,
Jacqui Wells

A Good Soul
Kate,
I doubt that you remember me, but my name is Sue Elam and I use to run the Dayton Women's Music Collective at Canal St in Dayton, Ohio. Mick and I booked you there several times and I always wanted to tell you how nice it was meeting you and how I appreciated all your kindnesses. I've always loved your work and appreciated your openness. Thank you for being such a wonderful role model and for the political education you've given to other lesbians. You're a good soul and a wonderful person. Keep it going!!

Dear Kate,
Happy Holiday Season to you and yours. Briefly, I hasten to state that my friend and I think you are truly a wonderful person. Moreover, during my visit to Cape Code every July, I always have a front row seat during your wonderful shows. I will attempt to support and fortify your clearly just political and social views. God Bless you my sister. Being a Cancer Patient, you are good medicine for this old guy. God Bless and have a great Holiday Season and all the year.

VLOG AWAY
Wow refreshing is this vlog!!! Got the news from watching Logo. Kate Clinton, you are hilarious! I love the different topics that you discuss; your humor is right on. I appreciate you representing my age group, too. You say things that we are thinking but never say. Love your touching base with The L Word, politics, sports, and everyday experiences. Also, I like that you set the tone by letting us know where you are at and with such vivid detail. Thanks for bringing comic relief in such crazy times that we live in. Now I have 2 things to look forward to: new episodes of The L Word and you! Oh, and of course, when George W. Bush is finally out of office.
Thanks for this. I absolutely loved the Gloria Steinem article (the woman's a legend). As soon as I read it, I posted it to my facebook profile. Lo and behold, I instantly had two comments up from guys who were saying it was rubbish, a load of bull, ignorant, fluff, all lies, etc. I couldn't believe their audacity! It reminded me how far we have yet to go.
Check out the article here:

I was INFURIATED by Dowd. What is wrong with that woman? I refuse to post the link. But this election is fascinating in so many ways, not the least of which is the gender question. BBC America had another extremely interesting article, worth a look:
