SUMMER GREETINGS

After a cool, rainy May, June is suddenly a hot blast furnace here in New York. In just a few weeks, I’ll make my summer pilgrimage to work in Provincetown.

After the primary season slog, we’re all a little tired. So turn off your phones, iPhones, Blackberries, computers. Step away from your vehicles. Get a trashy novel and really take some rest. We’re going to need all our energies for the fall campaign.

And me? I've got my SPF 140, my annual copy of War and Peace, and some new grilling plans. After a stroll with the Dyke March - they don't march, they mingle - and my annual emceeing of the LGBT Center's Garden Party, I'm off to work in Ptown!

If I don't see you there - Have a great summer!

The 'True Colors Tour' returned to Radio City Music Hall with an exciting new line-up of legendary and up and coming artists including Cyndi Lauper, Kate Clinton, The B-52s, Regina Spektor, Indigo Girls, and The Cliks, hosted by Carson Kressley!

Featuring nearly five hours of nonstop music with exciting special guests, this year's tour highlighted the need for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and their straight allies to get out and make their votes count this fall.

A VISIT WITH DIVINE PROVIDENCE MAGAZINE

DP: Tell me about your new show, Hilarity Clinton ’08.

Kate Clinton: The new show has something for everyone – sports, news,
opinion, reviews, religion and breaking news. I put the broad back in
broadband. What’s old is me – still looking at everything from the
point of view of a tax-paying, America-loving lesbian and family entertainer.

DP: If you were advising Hillary Clinton’s campaign, what would you
tell her?

KC: Don’t Go! I know people are nervous about the process but I’m
thrilled that I’m still having fights at dinner parties and on the
subway with people about the campaign. People forgot in the last seven
years – but this is what democracy looks like.

DP: As of today, George W. Bush has 266 more days left in office. Won't
you miss making fun of him?

KC: I’ll miss him like an impacted wisdom tooth. 81% of Americans
believe the country is going in the wrong direction. Who the heck are
those other 19%? I’ve still got work to do.

DP: How are New England audiences different from audiences in other
parts of the country?

KC: Well, first of all, they can all get married. The primary season
has certainly shown that there are still regional differences despite the
homogenizing maw/mall of capitalism. That’s a good thing. The biggest
difference is that the Northeast is my stomping ground and I’m overly
familiar, borderline inappropriate with it.

DP: What do you like about Provincetown?

KC: I have wonderful friends, a sweet little house, and a job that
allows me to ride my bike to work. For two whole months I don’t have
to get on a plane to get to work and that is a joy.

DP: Would you ever consider doing your show in Rhode Island? Have you
been to the state before?

KC: I just was in Providence to visit some friends who are working at
Brown University and had a great time. It was nice to stop there
instead of driving through to Ptown from NYC. Love the new bridge! I loved the
architecture, the waterfront, the scale of it.

DP: You will also be appearing on Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors tour at
Radio City Music Hall. How did that come about?

KC: The producers of the tour got in touch with us. We jumped and it
will be a blast – Cyndi is the gayest straight gal around and the
tour raises lots of money for some of my favorite organizations. And to
perform at Radio City Music Hall without having to get in a sequined
outfit and high heels, well, enough said.

DP: Time to talk love and sex: What is your idea of a romantic evening?

KC: Being home with my dear partner, cooking dinner together and
watching HBO’s John Adams and The L-Word at the same time. My
girlfriend had the clicker, which means she’s the femme. She flipped back and
forth so much the founding fathers started looking very gay. We don’t have
TIVO because I understand it causes lack of sexual interest.

DP: Tell me about your CD, Climate Change. What topics do you discuss?

KC: I think of CDs as records of what I’ve been doing and I really
liked my Climate Change show, so we recorded this 8th CD at one of the last
nights of the show at a roadhouse outside of DC. It’s rollicking good
fun. Don’t listen to it in a moving vehicle. Especially if you’re
driving.

DP: What is the secret of your success?

KC: I have no other skills and I love what I do. I think it’s all
about having new material and bringing audiences along with you. I started in
the supportive bosom, naked at the time, of the lesbian community and
then the gay and lesbian community. Because of the work we’ve all
been doing, more and more straight allies know of my work and come to shows.
It’s all about organic growth – I’m a 27-year overnight sensation. And I
love to make people laugh.

HAPPY SPRING

It is staying light until after 7pm! It will soon be lilac and peony time here in the Northeast. I am spring cleaning like mad. Getting rid of outdated and outgrown things. Giving away things I don't need anymore. Things I just don't use that take up a lot of space.

Things like whining about the primary, carping about voter gullibility and political spinelessness, despairing about war. I have a lot more room on my shelves and with it renewed creative energy to say, write, and do whatever I can for peace.

In this month of yes-you-may, clean house, use the new light, plant some new seeds. I'm going outside to do a Dance to Spring!

E-HARMONY WITHOUT THE HOMOPHOBIA

Congratulations to Helen Elizabeth Duffy who had won the Date With Kate contest last September. When Helen received the news she exclaimed: "As we said in Catholic grade school...'jesus, mary and joseph' I am thrilled ....Nothing expresses my astonishment. Thank you." This May in Columbus, Ohio, Kate and Helen had an amazing afternoon together.

Helen writes:

Having lunch with Kate is and was a highlight! I really felt that we were old friends and that we could have spent more time with each other.

She listened to my babble with keen interest, including my anecdotes about growing up with a Catholic education (and guilt). I was certain she had similar stories from her other and many fans. (She listened as if she never heard them or experienced them before).

Kate was so warm, so sweet, and imparts a joy of life. As we parted, we hugged and wished each other "Safe Home."

I thank all who made my life all the better because of this.

A VISIT WITH BILERICO

How did you get involved with The Bilerico Project?

My darling publicist told me to check out what you are doing. She knows everything and mostly I do what she says.

What was your experience like?

In fits and starts. Everything speeded up when my younger brother stopped by when my girlfriend and I were having sex and he thought someone was being hurt. Which is why he stood by and listened for about twenty minutes. Is this too much information? That speeded the coming out to the family. My second lover was a Quaker and had no concept of guilt. She said, "I told my sister all about you." I was horrified and said, "Why?" She said, "Well why not?" And I thought, really, why not? I came out at 28. To make up for lost time, I got a microphone and started telling everyone.

What's your favorite thing to do when you think no one is looking?

Wear dark glasses, stare at people and make up stories about their lives. By the end of subway ride I have a whole novel about my fellow riders.

Who do you think will win this year's WNBA finals?

It would be nice if The Liberty won, because most New York sports teams suck right now.

Favorite late night snack?

Have you met my girlfriend?

Best thing about being a comedian:

I love to laugh. Love it. To make people laugh is an absolute pleasure. And if they think about things I've said later, it's even better. And getting paid in Euros.

First Communion

dear kate today being the eve of easter i find myself in reminiscence
concerning tomorrow's holiday. leon lancaster is my name and i was kay's
godson. also, i believe i made my first communion with you. i've followed
your career with interest over the years, and somehow i haven't made the
effort to say hello. well now i am. as i remember your folks were great
friends with leroy and gertie dawson as well as my folks adelaide and leon.
i still have catholic relics from your mom. i didn't have the heart to part
with them. that church is no longer my cup of tea, and it would seem ditto
for you. what a strange bit of mumbo-jumbo to lay on small children. my
folks passed on in the mid ninetys, but my brother and sister remain alive
and well. john lives in washington d.c. and potsdam ny of all places. my
dear sister mary resides in the village of hamburg .with her husband of39
years; edwin.

i am a young 61, a building contractor by trade. i have a wonderful
twenty-seven year old son, and a fantastic girlfriend of seven years. i've
lived on nantucket since 1969 and am rapidly tiring of the place. a
yuppie-ghetto would be an apt description. so the house is going on the
market and hopefully we can move on. the changes i've seen in those 39
years are astounding. greed grows here like weeds on the interstate.
enough said.

i have some wonderful christmas cards from your family (the family photo
thing in front of the fireplace with the stockings) would be glad to send
them along for your enjoyment, let me know. i guess i am assuming your
family memories are as good as mine. let us hope so. anyhow take good care
and continue to bring joy, laughter and peace to a troubled world.

As a good recovering Catholic I await your comentary on the Popes arrival

Living in Oregon I am in a quandry on how to vote in the Primary. Right now
they both make me mad and I will move to Canada if McCain is the next Pres.

The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and the issues that affect their lives.

Kate (Recipient of The 2007 GLAAD Pioneer Award) presented the Excellence in Media Award to Judy Shepard in recognition of Shepard's work to promote full equality for the LGBT community through the Matthew Shepard Foundation. The Excellence in Media Award is presented to individuals who, through their work, have increased the visibility and understanding of the LGBT community in the media.

"As we are fast coming upon our annual pride weeks of events. I simply feel that I must share something with you, my friends that reminds us of our constant fight... I do not tell this story for sympathy but for education to the younger generation... Here goes (only few friends and family know this story) ... on the final night of Miss Gay Oklahoma 2002 (Kitty Bobs year) I was robbed of seeing one of my oldest and dearest friends win his much deserved title because as I left during a break to go to my car to get money out of my locked glove compartment...as I was getting out of my car I was grabbed from behind...dragged in front of my car so no one could see what was happening. I was kicked at the base of my skull three times...flipped over kicked in the face...robbed and basically left for dead. My beloved sister Kathy got me to my doctor. Luck was on my side I simply only had one side of my face that looked like raw hambuger meat. The next cognitive memory I had is six weeks later. The reason I have decided to share my story is that this was only the beginning of severe POST TRAUMATIC STRESS, I remembered nothing of the attack for six years just a simple light in the corner of my eye that resembled the dim light similar to the light under which my car was parked sparked what can only be described as a constant loop of the attack happening over and over again. We my friends deserve our Pride and our justice but there are those who still hate us enough to commit acts of horrible violence. Please when traveling to and from your local bars please travel in two's or a group. This is the beginning of a celebration for us and I will be there front and center to be counted! Celebrating 21 years of pride in Oklahoma City and to remember those who were not as lucky as I. You see I WON...I survived I'm here and I will fight to my death before another brother, sister, bi-sexual or transgendered American is attacked in my presence.....FIGHT AND BE COUNTED!!!!! What a pleasant surprise to turn on the radio this morning and hear your chipper voice, expounding on the current political climate of our country. I was smiling the whole way to work. I considered calling in to the station and exposing you for the life-changing molder of our youth that you are, but thought better of it.

I can't believe you are going to be performing this Friday night in my fair city. I, as it always seems to be, will be out of town this weekend. I haven't seen you perform live in about a hundred years. For some reason, whenever you are in Rochester, I have something else going on. And in a wonderfully ironic twist, this weekend I will be in Ithaca, the alternative lifestyle capital of NY. (I'm camping with a bunch of Boy Scouts - please refrain from commenting on that)

Hope you have a great show, and I hope you make it back this way before too long.

Hey Kate,

I am sure you don't remember me. I was one of your students at Melrose High School in the early 70's. I was a quiet kid and didn't get into too much trouble in school. I think I had you for English or Literature if I remember correctly. Anyway, I was reading a book of stories about how teachers made an impact on kids. This got me to thinking about my teachers and I remembered you. You were young and hip and wore these cool Gloria Steinem glasses. One particular incident I have etched in my mind, all the students had to give a one on one oral book report to you. As usual, I hadn't picked up the book until the night before, and then just skimmed through it. When my turn came to give you my report I gave the overview and you quickly said, "Brian are you shitting me, you didn't read this book." It was the first time I ever heard a teacher swear, and I was bagged. But after that point I was always prepared, not just for your class but for all the other as well. You were a great teacher, thanx.

Kate Moira Ryan started her career in 1985 as a winner of the Young Playwrights Festival. Her adaptation of Dorothy Allison's novel, Cavedweller premiered at New Yorks Theatre Workshop and was published Dramatists Play service. Her play, OTMA is being produced by the Atlantic Theater in NYC in June. It was also recently produced at the Ekaterinburg Youth Theatre in Russia. G-d Doesn't Pay Rent Here written with and for comedian Judy Gold will be seen at the Museum of Jewish Heritage on June 22, and also the Montreal Comedy Festival July 16-22. Her adaptation of Ann Bannon's The Beebo Brinker Chronicles with collaborator Linda Chapman will be produced in NYC spring 2006.

I'M DIVESTING MATERIAL POSSESSIONS IN CASE I HAVE TO MAKE A QUICK GETAWAY IF MC CAIN IS ELECTED. YOU UNDERSTAND. GIVEN HIS HEALTH AN AGE, I THINK WE SHOULD ALSO VOTE ON HIS RUNNING MATE.

Since you were originally from the Upstate NY area, does coming to Rochester for your Feb. 29 show almost feel like a homecoming? Bring back good memories, I hope?

MY HEART'S GEOGRAPHY IS STILL THE ROLLING HILLS OF UPSTATE NEW YORK. PLUS, I'LL BE LETTING ALL MY PALS FROM SYRACUSE KNOW THAT THEY NEED TO TAKE A RIDE.

You have so many fans here in the area and KATE CLINTON: 25th ANNIVERSARY TOUR was such a huge hit in our festival last year. What's the secret to your magnetic charm and staying power?

ONE TIME I HAD A BOUQUET OF CARNATIONS THAT LASTED ALMOST FOUR WEEKS. I THINK IT WAS THAT STAPLED FLORAL PACKET. SO NOW I JUST HAVE ONE OF THOSE IN A GLASS OF WATER EVERY MONDAY MORNING AND THAT DOES IT FOR ME.

You probably get inspired by everything that happens in the news and around you. And you are probably one of the few people that benefited so much from having Bush in the White House for 8 years. I love that there is a lot of social commentary in your comedy as well. How do keep your materials so fresh and so in touch with your audience?

I SHOULD BE ON THAT REALITY SHOW - WORLD'S HARDEST JOBS. WHILE GEORGE IS THAT COMEDY GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING, I'VE HAD TO USE MY VAPORS TO GET THROUGH IT. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO A NEW ADMINISTRATION.

What should your fans look forward to on Feb. 29?

A LOT OF LAUGHS TOGETHER!! I THINK THAT'S THE ONLY WAY WE ARE GOING TO GET THROUGH THESE LAST MONTHS OF GEORGE.

I've never believed in destiny -- I'm much too secular for that -- but I think it might just be possible that every Kate I've ever known has been just ... well ... fabulous!

I was just watching your vlog on After Ellen and I'm sooo glad to see you're a Hillary fan. I was fortunate enough to catch you a few years ago at the Birchmere and I know how astute you are politically. My gf is completely obsessed with Hillary and this campaign (we regularly have our HRC signs destroyed or stolen from our yard) and last week she hatched an idea to create a Hillary ad/video targeted to the upcoming Wisconsin primary and those that follow it. I'm never quite sure who is influenced by tv ads but it can't hurt to try. Here's the link -- if you like it and can pass it along that would be great. I know you're seeing the same things we are -- the only way she loses the nomination is because she is a strong woman.
